the 8mm studs are about as round as a #2 pencil. The 10mm studs are about as round as the fat pencils you used in kindergarden. If there is any confusion, get a caliper and measure the stud diameter. One is 8mm, the other is 10mm. The wrench needed for the nut is not accurate (especially with VW's unique bolts!).
Explain "wrench needed for the nut is not accurate"

David ,So i dont have a good eye for this stuff but...... Is there anyway to identify which head studs are in a 74 motor? I started reading online and it says the changed them fro 8 to 10 mm (the godfather told me this) is it indicated in the vin or on the case somewhere? I still have a small puff coming out on the back side of the # 2 so was wondering if i put the wrong tourge on the head. I tourged them at 18,which would be correct for the 8mm.Only see this (puff) when i throttle it hard, and it seems to get less as the engine gets warmer.  ???
No, I told you they went from 10mm TO 8mm. You swapped on the above post. Is the puff between the cylinder and the head ?   With the tin installed , I can't see how you could see it unless its blowing straight down.  How did you set your timing and how many degrees ?  I,ll explain later.

Now you have me confused. Do you have a degree pulley ?  Did you REV (moved the gas? ) the engine to about 1200 Rpm . Is that what you are saying ?   Does your light have a advance knob ?

You are going to have to answer all my questions. Are running a pulley with the degrees marked on it . If not , which mark are you using on you stock pulley ?  If you have a degree pulley you set the light on "0".You are ok there.

YEA !!!!! There is a GOD!!!    You might end up taking that head off and check it out. You might have something stuck in there.  You can take a old cylinder and put a little valve grinding compound on the area where it sits on the head and lap both #1 and #2 like you do a valve.  Have you figured which size stud you have ?
   10mm----25 lb
    8mm-----18 lb

I think I'm going to go mix me a Toddy ;D ;D ;D    Bound to have a Bug or import shop around that area somewhere.  OR you could just drive it around for a while and see if it will sort of seal itself up from some carbon. Keep me posted Big Guy.
