According the Haynes manual, mimimum is 100 psi with a maximum 21 psi differance between cylinders.  Take that with a grain of salt, it's from the Haynes manual.  I'm thinking for stock piston/cyliders and heads, it should be about 120 when everything is new.  I know for a fact that the engine will still run with less than 100 psi per cylinder, but it won't have much power (been there, done that).  So, 100 psi minimum may be correct, but I would be a lot more concerned about the difference between cylinders.  21 pounds sounds way high to me.  I've always been told anything more than 10% differance between lowest and highest is bad.

That's my 2 cents worth . . . which isn't worth a nickle.  ;D  I'm sure David will get us straighened out on the subject next time he strolls through here.   8)

interesting... Wonder why the typically hot one is the highest? Are you sure that your valves are all adjusted correctly? Doesn't make sense in my book, but stranger things have happened...

I talked to Fred (B.D.) about his bikes compression .  He built the engine some time back and has not been driven for a couple of years and has about 10 miles log on it. The engine is not even "broken in " yet plus being gassed to death. It not a wonder why the compression is all over the place. Sometimes if you check a engine with brand new P/C's you would be surprised how the compression differs between cylinders . Most of the time I have found that about 105-110 lbs is about normal with stock heads after about 3-4 K . I got a "eye opener" when I checked the compression on my 88mmX 76mm stroker engine, O41 heads and a C-35 Scat cam. I was lucky to find 85 lbs. I later found out it was due to the overlap on the camshaft lobes. Normal stuff. It was a screamer.

David ,So i dont have a good eye for this stuff but...... Is there anyway to identify which head studs are in a 74 motor? I started reading online and it says the changed them fro 8 to 10 mm (the godfather told me this) is it indicated in the vin or on the case somewhere? I still have a small puff coming out on the back side of the # 2 so was wondering if i put the wrong tourge on the head. I tourged them at 18,which would be correct for the 8mm.Only see this (puff) when i throttle it hard, and it seems to get less as the engine gets warmer.  ???

the 8mm studs are about as round as a #2 pencil. The 10mm studs are about as round as the fat pencils you used in kindergarden. If there is any confusion, get a caliper and measure the stud diameter. One is 8mm, the other is 10mm. The wrench needed for the nut is not accurate (especially with VW's unique bolts!).
