Good place for parts?

« on: December 13, 2004, 04:01:36 AM »
Hey.
I really need a head for my '78 Westy engine.

I've posted in the Classifieds, but haven't gotten any responses at all.

I don't really want to shell out all the cash for a brand spankin' new one, but if I have to, I will. I love my Westy!

As far as a brand new head goes, what brand or company do you recommend?

Try calling Joe Kirkpatrick at Tri-State Imports. He's very close to you in Cleveland. 423-476-1149

Hey, Unless you are really sharp on these heads and know what to look for in terms of condition and could trust the seller to tell you the truth about the head, I would spring for a new one if you can afford it. These type 4 heads don`t have a very good track record as far as valve seats . They like to come out of the head. No warning some times.  Used heads that are laying in someones garage may be sitting there for some other reason than looking pretty. I worked on those things for a long time and have seen a lot of "good used heads" come apart.
You could try Anthonys trick with using 914 heads ,but you would have to have a pair. Bigger valves, different plug angle. They might last longer,I don`t know. He seems to really like them. I would talk to him about  the pros and cons by going that route.
   Anyway ,buyer beware !!!

Something else to think about. Why are you doing just one head ? Is your "good" head as old as the problem head ?  If so, you would be smart to check/replace or at least do a valve on that head. Frankly , I would replace both heads just so I could have a little confidence that I could motor down the road for awhile without having the dang valves hit me in the butt in "No Wheresville ".  Its not if, Its when.  :?:  :?:

Well, I had bought the current head to replace an old one.
Had both heads machined and was about to put the exhaust back on when I noticed the exhaust ports were different. I had mistakenly purchased a square port head instead of the circular kind I needed. :(

Joe's cool. I only live about two miles from Tri-State Import so I go to him all the time to ask questions and get parts. He's the one that told me that the head was for an air-cooled Vanagon. The exhaust ports are the only difference. Unfortunately, he didn't have any heads at the time. That would be my luck!

As far as online/mailorder companys who would you recommend buying from?
