Ghia losing power :(

« on: October 27, 2005, 05:03:32 PM »
For a while now I've noticed a lack of power with the Ghia.

Pulling off is fine - acceleration is smooth.  Even pulling off hard with high revs is not a problem.  However, the engine really struggles if I'm running in too high a gear - ie 4th gear at about 45mph.  If I push the accelerator all the way, the car coughs and splutters and almost stalls.  Obvious answer is not to do this, but with the recent cold weather it's been acting the same during normal driving.

I've had new electrics (plugs, points, distributor cap, rotor, HT leads) and a new fuel pump within the last 6 months, and the timing was sorted several months ago by David.

I haven't done the valve timing yet but not sure if this could be the cause.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Matt, It wouldn't hurt anything to check your valve lash and point setting, but I lean toward maybe you starting to develope a carb problem. Hard to say without seeing it.

OK I've got all the stuff I need to sort out the valve clearances so I'll get that done this weekend and see how it goes.  I'll also check the points gap and let you know.

Thanks!

Be sure and re-set your timing after messing with your valves and points.

I hope you can figure this out because it sounds like my engine.  When I get in 4th i get nothing. Not that 1-2-3rd are anything to brag about.    I read about  spraying  the running engine/carb etc with starter fluid to find vacuum leaks (Carb spray does not have enough explosive power) and I'm about to try it on mine.   SC

We're talking about the "triangle" now, Godfather. They can do stuff like that and get away with it where most "normal" folks can't.

I checked the points gap last night and it was too small - re-adjusted with a feeler gauge and it's running loads better.

There's still a bit of unhappiness when the engine's under load so I'm going to check the valve clearances anyway - can't do any harm!

Thanks for all the advice.

Valve clearances are pretty much spot on so it's not that.  Never mind, it's good enough for me for the moment!
