Generator Question...

« on: November 02, 2008, 06:33:01 PM »
What can i say but volkswagon lights hate me.... This time i just need to know if not driving the bug for about a week ( have started it and let it run ) and then this weekend i backed it up on my ramps and have been doing a few things to it. Nothing mechanical. Now about an hour ago i went to pull it down and the generator light stayed on. I checked the engine and it all was running correctly as i can tell. There seemed to be a slight squeak in the generrator for about 10 seconds and then it stoped and there was the normal running sound but the light stayed on. My question is " Can my lack of driving and then leaving it uneven on the ramps cause some how the light to stay on ? "

Im scared to guess what you could have done. Arced a wire off on the regulator and fried it? Knocked a wire off on the generator. The lil one is the warning light. Man maybe YOU should buy Matts Scirocco and call it a day.

If it aint broke stop trying to fix it! Alot of things can go wrong monkeying  :munky2: around with stuff. Please for Pete's sake dont mess with the timing...ever!!!
....or the carb... or the valves....etc. Stop messin with it! [-X

Thats the problem, i did not go near a wire, fuse or even open the engine lid after i fixed the light problem the other day. Every thing was working fine and i backed it up on the ramps, pulled off the running boards and did some corrective sanding and painting. That is it !!! Nothing else !!! Trust me after the engine swap i have had profesionals work on it. I will only put a new air filter or gas filter in it........

You mentioned it made a noise for about 10 seconds, sure the gen didnt go out on it. Hook a voltage tester to it and check.

I have not even wanted to check it yet. I got so pissed off when the light came on that i just shut it down and walked away from it. I will try and find a tester tomorrow or such and check it. i may just pull it behind the house and pull a tarp over it and leave it........ :x

Well i got up early this morning and got my mind ready for the bug and went out to start it. I turned it on with no problem and the light was still on. I went around and opened the engine lid and listened. There was a squeak but it was not in the generator as i had thought before with the neighbor kids screaming near me before. I found that it was the sound made like when your belt is slipping or such on the old Trans Am  or Camero you had in the 80's. After about 2 minutes of running i saw the light go off. I waited about 30 minutes and went back out to start it again and there was no problem starting it again and no light stayed on. Could it have been the dew or such some how getting in on the pullies or belt ?The lid was closed so i do not see how it could have got there. But as of now it is running fine. All i know is " BEETLE HEAL THY SELF ".

ASBug did the same thing the other morning when it was cold and damp.  I hadn't driven it in a few days and I think that the humidity was causing the belt to slip.  Tightened up the belt and presto, no problemo.
Good luck,
KC

I know stock will get you home but I highly recomend cb performances billet pulleys as well as the BMD serpitine belt pulleys. Cb is pretty cheap the BMD's are high doller though. Yep a lil moisture and a slipping belt could do it to ya.
