Generato removal

« on: September 07, 2006, 04:27:27 PM »
Hi Ya'll,  I have a '72 Super, and am going to replace the generator.  I recently replaced the engine but did not mess with the generator while the motor was out  ( foolish) .  The Gen light came on and I am not sure why. I bought a new Bosch generator and voltage regulator and intend to replace both.  Any tricks to removing the generator without pulling the engine again?  It is fitting the new engine seal so well and all.  Thanks for any input.     Hip

Hip, There is a few ways to R &R a Gen. What I mean are tricks and if you haven't done them before, it probley would be quicker for you to just  pull the  engine because you have already done this.

Test it first to see if it is bad before you jump into it all over again. There could be a different problem or could be your regulator. Youd feel goofy if you did all of that and the gen was still good.

Well  I replaced the regulator and the Gen light went off.  I guess I have a new generator for future use.  Thanks for the input.    Hip

Hope you got a bosch reg if not find one now. Trust me I went through 3 pepboys specials one ran my gen to high and fried it,that was fun. Meanwhile check the out put on the gen make sure it is below 14.4 volts.

I just used a voltage meter and checked it coming off the gen. As I remember it's the big usally red wire. The little one is a signal wire I believe. You can check just about any wire getting juice. Just hold a meter on it it should be 12 volts give or take and when you rev the car up it should spike around 14.4. If it reads much higher or lowere then you may have concern. If the regs Bosch I doubt you have to worry.

And I can vouch for the fact the Auto Zone regulators aren't any better than pepboys specials!   If it's electrical, it's on an old VW and Bosch is an option, it's the ONLY option.   8)

If they make a part and it says Bosch,I agree there is no option on it. I'll take original parts any day over the crap they make now. Don't get me started on the Gimpy Empi parts makes me wanna choke somebody. None of that crap fit properly.
