Gear Box Leaks

« on: June 29, 2008, 11:19:17 AM »
Hi.  I just got my bus yesterday in southern Atlanta.  We stopped at Varsity's to enjoy a dog, and when we came out we had about a 3" diameter puddle of gear oil on the ground.  Not entirley sure where it came from.  We drove to Chattanooga and spend the night with family.  Not more than a couple of drops on the ground this morning.  The transmission seems to be shifting ok, and I don't hear any growling noises.... sorry... it is a late 63.... I'm trying to get to chicago,  I want to check the level, I believe it may have been over filled.  If the level is ok or low I want add.  Any reason why I should not continue my journey?

Thanks

Tim

What area is the leak coming from ?  Are you sure its gear oil ?
Alot of times its the axle boots . You also have a mainshaft seal . This seal leaks between the engine and tranny and will dump lube on your clutch. There are a few other places that it will leak from.
Keep the fluid level up and you will more than likey make it. Your call
     Good Luck !!

Personally, if there are no other signs of trouble, I'd keep a close eye on the gear oil level and press on . . . but then I've been know to push a vehicle a little past it's limits.

And by the way, :thumbs-up:  :thumbs-up: two thumbs up on your long road trip in a split window bus!  Keep us informed on how it's going and let us know if you need any help . . .

Well I made it back to chicago. . . . .  In an air conditioned tow truck

The bus ran good all the way to about 60 miles south of chicago.  I wanted to get gas one last time before getting into traffic.  I came off the exit ramp and it died, i poped the clutch and it got going and made it to the gas station.  I had lunch and went to get going and the bus wouldn't start.  I pusdhed it around the parking lot to jump it off the small hills and nothing.  A jump wouldn't work either.  Finally got as tow truck and found that the motor seized.  Not sure how that happened, no lights and the engine is full of oil.  The fellow who sold me the bus is shipping another motor up and Ill get it in over the weekend . . . . what an adventure

Well , Thats a Bummer.  You worry about the tranny and the dang engine goes South-- er--- North.  You didn't push it to hard did you ? like 75 mph.
Good that the P.O. is going to ship you a another engine.

Thanks . . . . Nope I was real carefull about keeping the speed low.  The P.O.  told me if I pushed too hard, I'd be on the side of the road with a blown rod . . . .
