gas smell

« on: September 27, 2009, 01:46:12 AM »
anyone know what to do about it ? I was talking to another bug owner in town and he says that he can't fill his bug's gas tank up all the way because if he does the gas smell gets real bad inside the car.

so he puts about a little over a half tank, his gas gauge doesn't work as far as telling you how much fuel you have in it, so i got to thinking that mine smells like gas as well and we have it on a full tank atm, my gas gauge doesn't work and would have no clue how to calculate that by not filling the tank up..

the issue with mine could be that it sat for a long time and its burning off some stuff, even though it has new fluids and brand new gas in it.

so if after a few weeks of driving it i am still noticing that gas smell like I am now, is there any fix or is that one of the vw smells I hear about lol

MAke darned sure that there are no leaks in the engine compartment so that your bug does not meet an early demise...

Also, check the condition of fuel hoses (soft rubber lines)... under the fuel tank and at the rear between the engine and frame (under the car)...

Last, the fuel tank sending unit seal on top of the tank, and the breather lines that run around it, on a 73 super, you may have a little plastic vapor canister in the trunk area as well, make sure it's not split.
Happy hunting.

thankfully we got this from our mother in law and her hubby is a fantastic mechanic, blinks just been a bit forgotten sitting in storage but they always started her up and stuff like that i'll have my husband come and look at this thread. We have that vw book for stupid people it came with the car! LOL

Yeah, forgot the filler hoses too.... I haven't owned a beetle with a remote filler (outside body area, not under the hood) in over a decade.....

Hi Cleek, Welcome .  Check all the fuel line hoses . That means ALL hoses under the hood. Small vent hoses, filler pipe, cap.  Also the rubber "0" ring under the fuel gauge on top of the fuel tank. Check under the fuel tank where you will see the hose to the frame. I have seen that hose leak into the tunnel at that point traveling through the tunnel on its way to the rear of the car. This will really smell  good.  Smelling gas fumes seems to be a common problem on older cars. Even with no apparent leaks , it seems that a person will smell gas fumes on a Beetle right after filling for a while. If the car has been sitting  for a long while, I would consider replacing ALL fuel hose front and in the engine compartment due to Aircooled  VW's  having this "Thing" about catching on fire due to cracked up and rotten fuse Use only O.G. hoses and not PepBoy rubber type hoses. Manley Forgeign Parts downtown has the proper hoses.  You would have to know about how many feet to buy and cut it to length as you replace it ( with new clamps) The hose is a little expensive but it works as it should.

Stay away from Auto-Zone for those hoses and anything electrical on a VW.
Use only "Bosch " on anything electrical on a VW. trust me on that one.
Get a copy of HOT VWS and you will find tons of parts catalogs you can get.

I'm a SLOW learner, but even I've learned that lesson!

Also, if it says EMPI on it and it wasn't manufactured in the 60's or 70's, odds are it won't fit quite right, it won't seal like it should or it will wear out or break in very short order.  EMPI does make a few good things . . . I think Rick once said he had an EMPI coffee mug that actually holds coffee and doesn't leak.  But, for the most part, stuff EMPI makes is junk.
