gas level sensor not OEm more smell-OEM

Ok,  suppose someone had a bad gas gauge and just wanted to know when the gas was at a certain level.  Like when it was close to empty.   Has anyone ever heard of a some kind magnetic thing.   Maybe like a stud finder but tells me when I'm about out of gas?

If your odometer works, figure your average gas milage and how much your tank will hold.  Let's say you average 26 MPG and your tank will hold 14 gallons when you are empty.  You can get an average of about 364 miles on a tank.  Fill up, check your odometer and fill up again before you get much over 325 miles on the tank and you should never run out.

Or, do like me and just carry a 2 1/2 gallon can of gas with you.  When you run out, pour in the 2 1/2 gallons and start looking for a gas station . . . and when you fill your tank, fill your can back up for the next time .  That method works every time without a working gas gauge or odometer.

OR, you could do something crazy like fix the gauge . . . but where's the fun in that?   8)

Yep !! They call it replacing a fuel gauge.  The sure fire method is when the engine starts missing and sputtering you are almost out of gas. Well maybe not on Stupy.Doesn't he miss and splut all the time ?  I don't know what to tell you

Find a long, skinny stick. Fill up Stupey. Insert the stick into the tank where you fill it up. Pull it out, make a mark on the stick where the gas line is. That's your 'F' mark. Drive until almost empty. Insert the stick again and mark where the gas is now. That's your 'E' mark.

I give Zen.  the prize for the most useful answer.  I need to get  decent gas can.   its my Daughters Car and its fuel injected and I have drop the tank etc to replace the sender unit  and might as well do the fuel pump.   That equals too much of my free time  and money.  the 2 things I prize the most.

I explained  the ole.  fill it up .. zero the odometer and drive till you get to 350 miles.   ... Repeat.  Yesterday  she ran out.   Seems she added 5 bucks worth and zero'ed the odometer.  Hmmmm..  I searched  for a some kind of retrofit gas gauge last night but it its fule injected .  it limits my options

thanks All.  Sc

Good Lord !!!  Just fix the dang fuel gage and be done with it. Talking about your FREE time, what are you going to do when the Girl runs out of fuel on a cold rainy night 10 miles away ?   Go help her or just leave the light on for her? God forbid if you use up some of your FREE time. Jezz!!

Harbor Freight sells a neat little hand pump with several feet of hose for both ends for under 10 bucks.  The first two or three gallons you get with it will pay for it and you don't have to worry about what that quart of gas you drank is going to do to you.    Ummmmm . . . just make sure no one is looking when you use it  8-[  . . .

What kind'a car is it?  If you want to try a used one, they are much cheaper than new ones.  I can pick you one up a Pull-A-Part the next time I'm down that way if you want me to.

FUEL TANK SENDER -- $11.11 -- Add $1.78 for 30 day warranty

FUEL TANK SENDER WITH PUMP -- $19.61 - Add $3.14 for 30 day warranty

I'm planning on making a trip down there the first weekend that halfway dry and warm.
