fuel pump problem.

« on: April 01, 2008, 10:26:25 AM »
OK, first off understand that I know just enough to get in trouble(great disclaimer, huh?)
'74 Baja Bug. I'm assuming the fuel pump went out based on the fact that it'll run if I manually sqirt gas in the carb and as soon as I quit it does too. Problem is I have the manifold that goes up and over the fuel pump so that when I remove the nuts and try to lift it off it hits the manifold before it clears the top of the studs. Can I use a jam nut to remove a stud to get it off or is there a better way without removing the manifold. It's irritating considering it's so easy to get to. Thanks for putting up with my ignorance. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, Lets clear up a thing or two. Are you running a alt. or a Gen. ?   Does the fuel pump stand up straight or does the top of the pump lean toward the Dist. ?   Was the car running then quit ?
The angle pump is made for engines running a ALT.  and the straight up pump was used on Gen. engines.   The straight up pump is not easy to take off, as you found out if you have a Alt. I'm going to assume you have a Alt. ( you should have) and a straight up pump for a Gen.
Once you get the pump off, I would replace it with the angle pump. but listen up.  You will have to replace the pump push rod. Just lift it out.
The straight pump push rod is longer and if you use it on a Angle pump , it will knock the bottom out  of the new pump the first time you turn the engine over. Don't forget to put a wad of grease on the fuel pump where the push rod rides. I hope I didn't confuse you to much. Just let me know what you have.
Those pumps are pretty tough so make sure that you have fuel TO the pump and don't have the hoses reversed at the pump.

I thought I was running a generator but I do have the angle top fuel pump so the rod would have already been changed. I hadn't driven it for a week or so when it went down and was running great when I parked it. I did notice that the fuel filter had lost prime which made me think the diaphram in the pump had went out. Don't know if that's even a logical line of reasoning. Are the studs pinned in? That was my big worry. I was afraid if I used a jam nut to get them out I might cause more damage.

This also,    You can take the hose off at the carb and stick it in a bottle then  have someone spin the engine over to see if it pumps fuel. If it does you may have a needle & seat problem in the carb.
I know asking you if the car was running then quit sounds like a supid question, but I had a reason for asking.

Didn't sound stupid at all! I had actually just had the carb went through 2-3 weeks before it went down. I assumed the carb was fine beacuse of that but stranger things have happened. I should have given you all my info from the get go, sorry. Does this give you any new thoughts? Thank you SOOO much for your help.

I still need to know which pump you have and Alt. or Gen. All these Tips are based on what info that I'm getting so I don't send you down the wrong Garden Path and get us both in trouble.

I now it's the angle pump but I'll have to get home and confirm whether it's an Alt. or Gen.

Just an FYI . . . If you end up needing a new pump, the Brosol fuel pumps coming out of Brazil are crap.  Expect to find about 1 out 4 bad right out of the box and the other three to have a life expectancy of less than three months.  Every now and then you will run across a good on that works and keeps working . . . but don't count on it.  The last two or three years I've had better luck with old "junk" fuel pumps I've picked up at swap meets.
