Fuel Injection Pump Alternative.

« on: February 24, 2012, 09:29:33 AM »
Ok, everyone knows I am cheep.
My bus's fuel system was giving me fits.
The fuel pump didn't do so well, seemed to be plugged filter, but then I'd check it and the filter was good.  I determined that I had a bad fuel pump, would work great after I hit it with a hammer for a while then would get loud and not pump so well.
So's I checked out the internet and the cheepest Bosch OEM fuel pump I could find was like $220+... WOW, that just upset my Cheepometer.
Did some more research and found that the 1985 and 1986 Ford F-150 used a Bosch inline fuel pump just like the bus one, except the inlet and outlet are both 5/8 inch.
Any way to make this post shorter, I got one on sale at Advance Auto ($73 inc. tax) and put it on last night.  It does work!  I have WAY smoother throttle now, the old pump was the original one and was worse than I thought.  I was also able to scrap the little fuel filter from hell and put on one of those big honking Mahle filters like goes on my Passat.  (larger than a can of Beanie Weenies!). I need to get some more miles on this before I can say for sure it is 100% but the run around the block is encouraging.
Just a heads up. I'll post more when I have some more mileage.
Oh yeah, do not forget to allow the pump to flow prior to buttoning up the system.  I did this and thought it wasn't working.  But after I allowed the pump o pump out a spare fuel line for about 3 seconds it burped out a gurgle of frothy gas and then flowed well.

Bus Depot sells Bosch fuel pumps for $120: http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=69414

$73 is a good deal though, for what is most likely the same pump inside. Is it pushing out the same PSI?

I wonder about pressures also. I wonder how many other cars out there run the same pump ?  I use to have a Bosch fuel pressure gage for testing but somebody liked it better than me. I loaned it to a( I thought) friend and it left town. >:(

I have just a generic fuel pressure gauge, it plugs into the test port on the left fuel rail.

Well at lease you got one.   KC need to check those pressures just to make sure he won't be blowing hose's and fuel everywhere. Not good when you are already driving a rolling Zippo.

I will do it, Maybe I can borrow Russ' guage.
There are a few persons using this set up on the samba.
I'll drive it more over the weekend and post up results.
The thing I like best so far is the BIG fuel filter.
I bet it holds 1 quart of fuel and is metal in lieu of plastic.
Best of all it was free with the passat, never installed (I got 2 with the car.)

People have been running these pumps on type 3s for years, so I'd say you're probably good.

How was the fit mounting to the bus? When I bought my pump a few years ago it was only about $100 which I didn't think was bad. Its been good to me thus far. I believe it is a python, same as my injectors.

Came with some rubber and I cut a little piece off and it fit great.
Drove it around the block again tonight, I'll take it out on the interstate tommorow and see if it is starving for fuel or not.
