fuel filter?

« on: September 14, 2007, 06:09:19 PM »
I have a '75 bus with an unknown year Porsche 2.0 pancake engine in it. I had problems restarting my bus in the middle of rush hour. I looked at the fuel filter and I used to see it 1/2 way (horizontally). So I bought a new fuel pump (all patent #s match-- assumed same psi) and after I installed it.......same thing! Gas was JUST at the bottom of the filter! Does anyone know what PSI the motor is supposed to be at? .......If the Patent # = the correct fuel pump is there a way to get the air out / or get more fuel in the filter?

What do mean its hard to start at rush hour ?    Do you mean the engine stalls everytime you stop in traffic or do you mean the engine quits running while you are driving along ?
What brand of pump do you have ?      Do mean part#s instead of patent #s  ?
Assuming you have a carb instead of fuel injection ? What kind ?
Lets get all of this sorted out before we go any further.

It stalled out; at that time my previous fuel pump was on the fritz. It took @ 3 mins for it to start up. Usually I can hear the pump pulsing. when it used to work I let it pump for @ 5-7 sec and it starts. However, at that time I couldn't hear the pump as well and it seemed to be an intermitant sond. It is carborated; and yes the "patent numbers". I took my old one in for a comparison -- because I didn't know the PSI nor the part number. The old one is a Facet and the new one is a Purolator. 12 volt -- 2-3.5 PSI.

Side note: I now there is a haevy gas smell from my exaust. Could that be a symptom of the same problem as well? If not ignore it and I'll deal with that skunk later.

I'm not familiar with the Purolater pump. I know the Facet very well.  The 2-3 pounds should be OK .   I'm not sure if you are not "barking up the wrong tree" .   Could be a carb problem or even electrical.  When was the engine last tuned up ?  What kind of fuel milage were you getting ?

not too sure? No ball park either. Some one mentioned adjusting either the idle or the air into the carb. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

I would have to agree with Ret.Tech on that.......especially if you can smell the fuel. I might lean a little further towards electrical. What type of ignition are you running?

Yeh, Im a little "short legged" toward a electrical glitch. Questions like these are very often hard to answer without the "Laying of Hands" on the Critter and you sure don't want to lead someone "Down the Garden Path" if you can help it. Its a lot easier when someone ask you what the 4 inch dia. hole in top of the crankcase means    Thats whats nice about the Forums, you get more than one opinion to what the problem may be.
Nobody has ALL the answers, but some are more correct than others.

OK, well....I adjusted the carb and it starts up without the steps that I needed to do before (turning on ignition for @ 5 secs, pumping the gas 3 times, etc......) it purrs like a kitten & I don't smell the gas in the exaust.

I will find out the MPG in a bit. However, it is a bus with a meat cooler for an air conditioner on top and well......drives like a shoe box of course!

Ret bugtech........concerning the MPGs...how far off of the "usual" will give tell tell signs of other problems?

On the wiring topic.....MAN I see soooo many loose wires and hoses and whatever the hells?.....it's not even funny! So I couldn't start trying to diagnose any thing on that end. SOON though........

I'm not really sure what kind of fuel mileage a 2.0 w/carb instead of fuel injection should get. You will have to talk to others about that and remember folks lie about things like that  I have heard people talk under their breath about somewhere around 16-19 mpg, but I really don't know. This I do know, a fire breathing Mustang or Corvette will do a lot better on the road. I have a friend with a 200,000 mile + worn out Lincoln Town Car that burns a Qt. of oil about every 700-800 miles but still gets about 26 mpg on the road.

Not too fond of camping in a Mustang or a Corvette.  :? But my bus gets better than 26 miles per quart

Think that does it for the fuel filter....I'll keep on buggin' --> (yeh I know....BOOOOOO) everyone when I get further into it.
