Front end work?

« on: June 09, 2014, 04:07:19 PM »
I'm looking at doing a rebuild on a '68 BJ front end, specifically the ball joints and tie rod ends. Anyone got any suggestions/experiences you can share on replacing these? I've seen a few methods on a thesamba. com thread. Does anyone own the specialty tools?

Travis Young has pressed ball joints for me. Are you looking for someone to do it for you or to do the hard parts?

The beam's on the ground right now, I'm swapping to that adjustable beam I got at the show. I could bring the control arms to Travis if he's interested.

That would be great, thanks. I've still got to get the parts, so it might be a few days.

Still waitin' for the ball joints to arrive from California-the kind with the extra travel for lowered front ends. I'll let you know when they get here.
I got out the pickle fork and BFH and took the steering knuckle/brake assembly off the trailing arms, so they're ready to go.
Hope Bonarroo was fun!

Travis,
I have a 10 ton press at the house, is it going to be large enough to pop out the ball Joints when I want to redo a '69 BJ beam?
I already have the Narrowed Beam, I Just need every thing else...

Casey, IF 10 tons won't press it out, you can grind the cap of the joint off, knock the ball and stud out and cut through the side of it right up to the control arm (I used a side grinder for cutting the cap off and a hack saw to cut through the sidewall on Homer's ball joints).  That relieves the pressure and they will pop right out.  In fact, I didn't use a press at all . . . I knocked mine out with a small hammer.

Bus are the only ones that are a problem,  beetle ones seem pretty easy

Bueno.
I have a 3" narrowed beam and would like to go ahead and prep it for installation in the Ghia.
I already have a set of lowered Ball Joints, the beam has the springs in it.  I just need the arms and the spindles. I already have the bearings and such for the rotors.
I am thinking that I will Just buy a complete Ghia front end from Alvin and pull the goodies  I need and cut down the tie rods.
I have had this beam for a while.
