front end work

« on: July 30, 2008, 02:50:19 PM »
As soon as I get feeBee back from Godfather (71 super) I am looking for someone to do some front end work and brakes or a shop in this area Fort Oglethorpe or close that can do the work for me. I am not sure what the problem is when you move the steering wheel back and forth you hear a clang clang. I'm sure Godfather knows what the problem is. Also the brakes are just not what they should be. Any information on where to take her will be appreciated

There is a short shaft between the end of the steering collum and the steering gear box that has a universal joint on each end.  You have to lift the gas tank up to get at it.  From you description, my first guess is that one of the u-joints has bit the dust.  It could also be a bad steering gear box or just a bushing missing from the steering damper or a number of other things.  Put the front end up on jack stands and have someone rock the wheel back and forth and look for where the noise is coming from.  There aren't a lot of parts to a Super's front suspension/steering, but if just one of them is even slightly worn, bent or damaged, you'll probably end up with the Super Beetle Shimmies around 45-50 mph.
