FRONT END PROB

« on: April 14, 2003, 10:47:17 AM »
I have a 1971 superbeetle with a frontend problem. It has a violent shake at around 30 mph...We have replaced the center tie rod, the left and right tie rod assembly and rotated the tires. I read in the Volkswagen manuel that it could be this or this, that or that...Any suggestions before I completely replace the entire front end?

Your experiancing the "Super Beetle Shimmies."  Super Beetles either handle great (everything on the front end is right) or terrible (ANYTHING is worn or set incorrectly).  There isn't much in between.

Two common culprets that often get overlooked are the steering damper and the universial joint on the shaft between the steering collum and steering gear.

If you rock the steering wheel back and forth, do you hear a clunking?  If so, you need to pull the fuel tank and replace the shaft.

Even if everything is right and the steering damper is bad, every little bump in the road will be transfered to the steering wheel.

Wheel ballancing, condition of the struts, steering gear, and all the bushings are also critical.

The undisputed experts on Super Beetle front suspensions is  (Top Line Parts.  Check out their web site for lots of info and parts to make your shaking Super handle like it did when it was brand new . . . maybe even better!  They sure helped me out on my 74 Super!

Oh, and one other thing . . . Make sure your wheels are actually round and the rim and center are straight and true.  After everything else was right on my 74, I had it on jack stands and spun the right front wheel . . . it looked and egg.  As a friend of mine who works at a tire store once told me "It doesn't matter how bad warpped and bent your wheels are, I can ballance them.  I can also ballance an egg . . . but it's still gon'na roll like an egg."

One other thing that can cause the "shimmies" is the axle nuts themselves not being tightened correctly. I had the "shimmies" in my '74 between 50 and 55. I was about ready to pull what little bit of hair out that I have left and an old VW mechanic told me to use a torque wrench on the axle nuts and quit guessing. I did and the shimmies disappeared. When all else fails, read the directions (manual).
