floor pan inserts - inside or outside

« on: June 10, 2004, 08:04:14 PM »
Well, got the passenger side floor pan in, pain but got it( just got to get it migged now). On the Drivers side little rust was under the rear seat, so bought a (thought insert for the drivers side off ebay (Mofoco parts & accessories ) when it came in, it was little to wide, wrong curves, etc. to sit down on the inside of the floor board, it would fit from underneath ok, but isn't an insert suppose to sit on the inside? are there different kinds? Ended up trimming the sides off and some of the back just to make it fit flat on the inside..I would appreciate any advice if I screwed up, where are the inserts suppose to go in, out, ??????
Thanks
Ron

Ron, I didn`t know anybody made a repair section that set inside or came up from the bottom over the rusted section of the pan. I thought you had to cut out the rusted section and then weld in the new piece.I have replace a few short sections but had to cut and fit then weld it in.  Like I said before, There is a lot of new stuff out there that I don`t know about ,but a "set in pan section" Im not sure about this.Maybe some of the other guys can shed some light on this . If your new section was the exactly the same size( before you trimed it) as the orginal pan I can see that it wouldn`t fit. I think I`m right . If not , I stand corrected.

Maybe that's where I'm making assumptions...I thought and insert would lay in there. 1. Cut out the bad under seat, 2. lay in the new piece and 3. weld to the old..With a insert, should I have to cut back the lips out on both sides? back to the tunnel where its spot welded? since the other side does not have bolt holes I can't trim back that far. This is what made me think, I should have just been able to lay it in..I'm only asking, because the new piece is wider than the orginal floor board by about a 3/4". The only way to make it fit would be to cut the lips out of the old or cut the lips of the new and then lay it in? please let me know what is easiet..I did write Mofoco back..Not only did they leave a voice mail but also e-mailed and said they would help in any way, replacing, exchanging, etc. so will call them back this morning, jsut don't wnat ot sound like an idiot, but sounds like I have already assumed this was going to be to easy..

Ron ,I think I would let Fomoco help you out here . I have not replaced enough pan sections to be any kind of expert here. There use to a fellow in Soddy named Don Robertson that replaced god knows how many floor pans. He has done a few for me years ago. I don`t know if he is still around.
COME ON VOLKS-FOLKS  help Ron out here. I sure don`t want to lead him down the garden path with wrong info or bad advice.

Thanks, The insert looks like the whitney 27" patch that was in a earlier post about "rust under the battery" Zen shot a pic of the 27" patch from JC Whitney. Well, the good part is, look at the experience we gaining.  We will "endeavor to presevere".

Well, touched base with Mofoco, They are having UPS pickup the old pan(even though I've sliced & diced on it) Monday. Once they get they'll look at it and if they have to get another one and even trim up for me. I have never seen a place that was out to satisfy the customer like this place. Well see what transpires next week. ( www.mofoco.com )
Thanks guys
