Flaps

« on: February 19, 2011, 08:46:06 AM »
Last week i took my 73 camper on it's first long trip-- from soddy to savanna,ga. With the new yokomeyer tires and every thing it went great, I drove 58-63. The thing I want to ask about is when it gets warmer will i have trouble because it doesn't have a termostat and there is no rod across or flaps to restrict airflow its been taken out.  It did come from the hot southeast so i assume they ran it like that there.I may be taking it to camp in Maine for the summer and it rarely get above 72 there. Thanks Steve

A lot of people(mech) took those flaps/rods and thermostat  out because they were either broken or bent up so bad they wouldn't work and could shut off air for the cooling system. The cooling system "stuff" on these type-4 engines really sucked under best conditions. Most were taken out when the engine was being rebuilt or something but they all came with "flaps etc.". Just keep your speed down. You should be ok even in "Yankie Land".

Without the flaps in place, the cooling air will bypass your oil cooler.

There is a flap above the oil cooler. But i don't know if that directs air over the cooler. I repeat ---and it's 72 degrees there!

I thought you said you didn't have any flaps. Is the flap locked in that position over the cooler? If so that means you are not getting proper cooling air over #3 & 4 cyl.which not very good to start with.

maybe i should call it a vent the two flaps that connect to the rod aren't there or the rod either.  that vent seems to divide the air flow. I don't know-- i should take it apart and see what it all is. I've had two beetles and one other bus but i've never had them apart MGs, MGAs, and a e-type i've had completely apart. I'd like to put a Toyota engine in it. But i just got a new fly rod and in a couple months i know a few places in the north maine woods. Beans and trout cooked over a open fire is the best!!

This illustration explains it pretty well. The whole system is designed to allow the engine to warm up to operating temp faster. Without it, your engine life is reduced. 15 to 17% according to Gene Berg, even in warm climates.

Type 4 thermostats are NLA. Some people have adapted type 1 thermostats to work though.
