First time owner. Knoxville.I need help!!!

« on: July 09, 2012, 03:41:30 PM »
Just bought 72 super beetle autostick. I love this car. I need help. This car has some rust issuesand internal issues. The vacuum wire to shift gears is kinda wired back together, and it likes to stall in low gear. I found a mechanic, was told he could get to it in 2 months. my husband is very mechanically minded, so he could do the work or we would even pay someone who could get to it before 2 months. Who can tell me of a mechanic in Knoxville that does estimates, knows about classic VW, and can give it to me straight. Will pay for this knowledge. I want to save this car, but I need to know if it is worth saving.

I personally can't point to anyone or a shop in the Knoxville area, but the Knox Volks club is hoasting their annual show weekend after next.  You can check out their web site for info on the show:  http://www.summerjamvw.com/  If you are just getting into air-cooled VWs, a local show like this a good place to meet folks and get ideas and leads.

Its been a few years, but I recall seeing a few aircooled VWs at European Motorworks at 2718 Sutherland Avenue  Knoxville, TN 37919

and I know I've seen some aircooled porsche stuff at the corner of Lexington dr and Cogdill rd.

Don't know if either of those will help, but that should at least get you started with finding someone!

If all else fails, there are a few shops within a few hours drive. One is in Bristol and another is in Charlotte. If you want to do that, I can get you their names/ addresses.

Be prepared to be stared at with a blank face when you say you have an autostick.
My first VW was a '72 Autostick and I would be happy to look at your car, but I cannot drive to Knoxville....
Please take a photo and post of your carbeurator and vacumme sylinoid set-up.
What is your timming at?
