well, I'm guessing there is no way make that stay in the head now that it has come loose... so I suppose I'll look around for a new 2.0 head. Sucks cause otherwise this head did look really nice (aside from the GEX

stamped into it under the valve cover)

Welcome to Type -4 engines. This is what they do. This why I love them so much

It is unusual for a intake seat to fall out but I have seen a lot of them do it along with the more common exhaust seat. You won't get it fixed around here. I would not trust a used up head either. You already have one of them now. If you can get a Federal Grant you could buy a Jake Raby head. I would just about bet there isn't 5 people in the USA can make a type-4 valve seat STAY in the head . The factory couldn't do it

Everyone on The Samba recommends Len Hoffman for heads, and he's not too far away in Athens, GA: http://www.hamincgroup.com/main.php

However, he will not service heads with a GEX stamp: http://www.hamincgroup.com/type4-used-policy.php

You could still contact him and see what his prices are like. I'm sure like Raby it won't be cheap at all.

I think Hoffman does the engineering for Raby's heads . Not cheap as Russ says .

If it is that expensive over here, you might wnat to take a look in germany? I know at least 3 or 4 people who can actualley fix heads like that easily.

If you want me to, I will ask them. Shipping is pretty bad with arround 150 back and forth put the repair itself is not tooo expensive compared to a $1000 head.

typ4 are a lot more common at home.

The 1.7s will work after they are cut for the larger cylinders, also have smaller valves and different chamber shapes, but good to go otherwise. Here is a link to some info...

As I remember ,the 1.7 didn't have the valve seat problem near as often . The 1.8 engines were a little worse with the 2.0 topping the list as the sorriest p.o.s. All of them loved to burn a gap in the shim between the head and cly ending up torching a groove through the head. We won't talk about exhaust port studs. I think the 1.7 was the best type-4 engine if you got rid of those terrible carbs(2). Just my opinion.
