figuring out original color

« on: January 02, 2011, 05:50:06 PM »
1974 Thing,
Would VW had painted the trunk and engine bay one color and the rest of the vehicle another color?
Trying to figure out original color of this Thing I now own. Engine bay and trunk are a cream/beige/white but interior is Red.  Hood, trunk, sides are blue with white stripes.

Think original could have been cream/beige/white and at some point a PO did a good job of painting the inside and out red( I do see where some chipping has occurred and there is beige underneath . Then sometime later, what look like some repairs done(maybe wreck or something) some one painted(possibly exterior paint of some type)  blue with white stripes trying to make it look Acapulco.
Just curious though of what VW may have done. Right now this an all American thing  Red, White, & Blue

Thanks
ron

i am with the undersatnding that they were one color, mine was a kelly green with a cream interior, trunk and engine bay.  the panels for the dash were baby blue, i am still not sure what the original color was. now it is yellow, not by my choice, some day it will be another color

As far as I know, all Things were solid color inside and out.The only muticolor thing was the '74  Acapulco Mexican model that was made for resorts shuttles. They were blue and white and had a  surry top with fringe. Southland VW ordered one for someone local but change their mind. It was re-painted green sold to a friend of mind.
Also keep in mine that the org. paint on all things was a semi-gloss epoxy based. It  was tough  as heck and hard to scratch. If the paint left on  your Thing was shiney , you can bet that it had been repainted somewhere along the line.

I recall reading somewhere that VW painted some of the panel buses' interiors a basic beige and only did the colors on the outside. I can't recall the specifics, but it sounds like they could have done something similar

Silver Beige... The interior of my Neptune Blue '69 Kombi was painted in that, hardboard panels too, no vinyl.. all of it painted.  Don't remember if they did the Things that way or not.   ???

To tell the truth, i have developed a case of tunnel vision over the years, and if a customer isn't specifically asking about it, i don't usuall go looking...  :-[

One reason, Have you ever tried to find something in a Komi at night or day time with a dark interior with no windows ?
Have NEVER seen a U.S. spec org. Thing with a different color on the interior engine bay, front luggage bay. Not even a org. new Bug, Ghia, Type-3 did this.

Just found some pictures and videos of the "The Thing" only (Kubel Treffen)  event held in Kentucky each year.  Out of of about 60 or 70 Things that showed up, every Thing was off white/cream, Orange, yellow  or Green.  Looked like there was only Two Red Things.  Then there was a couple that camo, blue, purple, etc.

As you somewhat mentioned David, Seems there was only a couple colors the Things came out in, even though Red was an available color for 183 vin number and up.

I never saw a green one ( really O.D.) until early '74 much less a red one ever. Interesting.
