Fender fitting

I have found a set of '64 fenders and bumpers for $200 that I want, and need to ask two questions, since I'm still a "newbie".
First, is it a good deal? The fenders and bumpers are both in really good shape, with just a little rust on the bottom of the left front, and left rear fender. The bumpers are in good shape, just need a little TLC- nothing that I can't fix at my dad's garage. Is it a good deal or not?
Second- what kind of modifications do I need to do to my '70 Bug to get these things to fit, or if it's too complicated, should I hand it over to my mechanic to do the job for me?

The fenders will bolt on without modification.  Your 70 has more bulbs in the tail lights than a 64 . . . you'll loose your back-up lights, but you can always add the 67 style bumper bracket mounted back-up lights.  That's not really that big of a deal.

The biggest "problem" is the bumper brackets.  I think the 64 brackets ran through the front apron instead of the fenders, and the brackets are larger on the 70.  You can modify one or the other and make it work, create some custom brackets from scratch, or if you can still get them, Rock Mountian Motorworks used to have some bolt on late bug to early bumper brackets in their catalog.

As for price, that's not that bad of a price. I've seen fenders go for $50 each IF they were good fenders and bumpers...........you don't see that many GOOD used bumpers being sold. You will see bumpers at shows and swap meets but the key word here is GOOD.

That's not a bad price if the fenders and bumpers are pretty much rust free.

You can from time to time catch new fenders on sale at swap meets for as low as $50-60.  But if these are in good condition and are original German parts, your better off with the used ones over new ones even if they cost a little more.  Here's a quote from a guy from the shop talk forums who bought some mail-order fenders:

I answered my own question.... i went with the I.S.O's and if you dont mind a little (well a lot) of bending the flange where the holes are then these are great. But there thin, pre-scratched, rough, bent sides, and well....cheap. But they work with a little massaging.

Hmmm.. all this info is good to know- thanks, guys!
Rachel about had a cow when I told her what I was going to do. I went ahead and got the parts- the guy dropped the price to $160, so that was nice. They are all original German parts, with little to no rust. The rear bumper needs more TLC than when first expected, but easily salvageable.
I have to wait until we get a new car to start work on the bug, as I will probably have to leave it in my parent's garage while I work on it. That will give my wife more time to get over my pruchase, also, LOL.
Yeah, Herb, I got "The Look" for this little deal. :;):
