fan scrubbing

« on: September 03, 2006, 09:20:25 PM »
another question. when I was turning the generator by hand to set the points, I could hear the fan on the other end scrubbing a little.. What's the best thing to do, pull the generator and fan and adjust? I don't hear when the motor turning, but by hand seems like there is a little fricton going on..
In John Muirs book, he also talks about puttingyour hand around the fan to check for anythign blocking air.. I didn't see much of way to get to the fan other than pulling it out..

thanks
Ron

Ron, You can loosen the band strap that holds the gen. to the stand and push or pull the gen in or out a little to clear. A lot of times this will cure the problem. Take your belt off first.

Thanks David
loosing the band and sliding the generator back worked perfect.. and like a dummy, seen now where I can put my hand on the back side of the fan to check the blower  and did find a wad of paper in the fan from where we painted the bug.

Thanks
Ron

Ron, I'm suprised that you didn't hear the "junk' in the fan. Sounds like a "roaring turbo" when you rev the engine.  Depending on the size of the trash in the fan, this can cause overheating. I have seen engines burn down from this problem. I pulled a #10 Rat out of a fan onetime. YUK!!
Happy that the "rubbing" thing went away.

Ived been hearing a vroomy noise with stupie lately.  I pulled the pully off and spun the generator and did not hear anything. then I re read this post/  I'll. reach back there and see if I got a rat in there.   I figure rodents who escape from cages think the VW fan is exercise wheel and are in there working out when we crank the engine .  sc

Be kind to the rodent if he is there. Keep him well groomed and fed. You will never know how handy he might be if you break a fan belt at 2;00 am in the middle of nowhere. Just think,a rodent in good physical condition running wide open might deliver 40 or so Amps.  Of course this is if you are using a # 10 wireless rodent. I don't think you would get much out of a "Triangle" raised Chinchilla.

I gathered my courage and reached behind the fan.  I thought I heard a squeak, but it may have just been a rusty hinge.  Yep Leaves,  SPun dry.  I like the design of the engine lid.  IF its covered with leaves and you don't want to litter the road, just raise the lid  , all the debris falls into the intake fan and is mulched up... Sweet.  SC

Dang it Godfather!  You can question our mechanicing ablility, and we are cool with that . . . you can laugh at our painting skills, and we are cool with that . . . but when you start talking bad 'bout our rodents, I'm begining to think you're just picking on us folks down here in the "triangle!"
