Well, Its possible that being a Vanagon engine it might still have Hyd. lifters. If not, Did you re-adjust the valves. You need to know if you have solid lifters or hyd lifters. If solid just them to .006 if Hyd you adjust the valve down to "0" clearance ,then screw the adjusting screw clockwise 2 full turns. BUT you have to know which one you have -solid or hyd.    Remember you had the rockers off and all adjustments went to hell.

It does have hydraulic lifters and I haven't adjusted the valves. I didn't think you had to if the lifters are hydraulic but I guess I so.

Doesn't the engine have to be at TDC before I adjust? Or is that for solid lifters only?

Well I did loosen all of the valves and tighten them until there was 0 clearance and then 2 turns more. It runs but it's noisy, like the lifters have bled down. I don't want to drive it until I am sure it is adjusted correctly.

Do I have to find TDC for cylinder #1 and adjust all the valves based on that position or do I find TDC for each cylinder and then adjust each individually? I know how to use a socket to turn my engine over by hand but i have never had to find TDC or adjust the valves.

You have to adjust each cly.  Start with # 1, adjust valves. rotate engine counter-clock wise 180 degrees and adjust # 2,  rotate engine 180 degrees and adjust # 3 , rotate engine 180 degrees and and adjust #4. Just like a Bug.  # 1 cly is going to be where the"0" mark on the pulley is lined up the timing marks on your plastic scale on the block and the rotor is pointed to the notch on the side of the dist. is lined up

Okay, great. That's what I needed to know. I'm about to go out tonight so this will be a job for in the morning, luckily I don't work tomorrow. I will learn how to do this.

The seal replacement went very well. I took my time and got everything all back the way it should be. The old seals looked worn indeed so I hope that will stop the oil leaking.

Hey! I followed your instructions. It runs a whole lot smoother now, still just a bit noisy but it sounds like my lifters have bled down more than anything. I think I need to drive it a little to get them pumped up. Too bad it is raining cats and dogs right now

P.S. I checked my oil level and it is good.

It's sounding even louder now and I haven't done anything to it since adjusting the valves. Something doesn't seem right about it. I don't know what I could have done

I readjusted the valves at 1.5 turns instead of 2. It sounds a lot better now. What do you think?

I have done 1.5 and got away with it.  Just as long as the valves "shut up" in a day or two.

Hey! I went back and double-checked my valve adjustment on cylinder #1. The left most rocker was really loose, so I tightened it back down to 1.5 turns. It's really smoothing out now.

I've gone through and adjusted all the valves again. I think I have a better understanding of what I'm doing now. Here's how it sounds now:

What do you think? Button it up and drive?

Well I got it all put back together and started it up only to discover a new sound! It's a very loud clatter and it doesn't sound like the valves. It actually sounds like it is coming from the center of the engine, like right around the fan. I don't see that I have dropped anything down there when I was putting it back together. I took video but we don't have power right now cause of the storm.
