Even MORE Key Stuff

« on: March 01, 2003, 12:26:24 AM »
:D
I know y'all get tired of hearing me talk about keys and locks, but it's the one thing on my VW's I'm finally starting to understand.  Anyway . . . If you need a key cut for almost any VW built between 1967 and 1995 (plus a few earlier and later) I have blanks!!!!!.  Well, I don't have them yet, but I just ordered 10 each of 8 different profiles and they should be here early next week.  These blanks cover everything except the glove box on all 1967 and later air cooled, some of their glove boxes, some 61-66 Beetles, and almost all of the water-cooled VWs up until the new style laser-cut keys.

The bad news is that they are aftermarket blanks (no VW emblem) . . . but they are cheap!  If you go to your local locksmith or hardware store to have a key cut and they don't have the blank you need, let me know.  I'll let them go for $1.00 each.  If these blanks are good quality and there seems to be a demand for them, I'll order 50 or 100 at a time next time and the price will drop!

The next thing on my wish list is a key duplicator.  If I ever save up enough money for one of those, I'll be able to duplicate keys AND after cutting a set of "code keys" I'll be able to create a new key just going by the code on the lock . . . as long as it's not one someone like me has re-keyed.

My key blanks haven't gotten here yet . . . they didn't charge them to my card until yesterday, so they should be here soon.  Shortly after they arrive, I should be able to cut keys, because I just purchased an Ilco Key Machine off of eBay!   :D

Hopefully I'll have all this in hand before our next meeting . . .

:D   My key duplicator left Dalton, GA this morning at 6:00 AM and is "out for delivery" . . . If I can find a short V-belt for it this afternoon I'll be cutting keys tonight!   :D

I unpacked my key machine last night, went by the hardware store and picked up a vacuum cleaner belt this morning (not the correct belt for this machine, but it works), did a little set up and adjustment on the machine and just copied a key for my super Beetle ignition switch.  IT WORKED!!!  So far I have a 100% success rate.  I haven't ruined a blank yet!

Anyone want to buy a key machine and a bunch of blanks?  I might ought to quit while I'm ahead!  LOL

 :D

I've cut 4 keys so far and still have a 100% success rate!  I did have to run 1 of the keys back through twice on one side because I didn't have it cutting deep enough, but I finally got it working without ruining the blank!

Making a set of code keys for each profile is going to be a time consuming process and with all we have to do between now and show time, I'm not going to even start working on them until after Bug-A-Paluza is over.  But, if you just need a key copied from the existing key for your Bug, Bus, Thing, Type 3, Type 4, Vanagon, Dasher, Fox, Rabbit, Eurovan, Golf, Jetta, Cabriolet, etc. . . . If it was made after 1960 and before 1998, I can probably fix you up.
