Much time, cutting body panels.... it won't phsically fit without hacking into the body shell.  Aside from being a bit slower, you will gain nothing but headaches and an empty check book paying for repairs for said 914 engine.  Just my experienced opinion.  The upright engines, while lacking in the power category, are as a general rule, more reliable and easier, cheaper to fix.  As a matter of fact, there are a number of people who have spent the money and taken the steps to put the earlier engines into the later type-4 powered buses.

I'm just saying.....  I wouldn't do it, myself.

I'm guilty of that offence!  And I'd do it again.  Until I hit the lottery so I can afford a Jake Raby built type 4, I'm sticking with the type 1.   ;D

Do any of you guys know where I can find a "low cost" engine to put in my van? I really need to get it up and running so I can stop bumming a ride from the old lady. Tired of being a one vehicle couple.

^^^^ Agreed.... and, Bob Hixson usually has a couple rebuilt ones there too, pretty affordable too.  He builds a good engine, has for years.

recently got an engine from mr hixson,  known him for 17 years, he had an all original 63 bug with low mile that he drove to new england and back,  he also had a later model bus with a 1600 that he used to drive to alaska and back

Well no luck at the show but still had a good time. I've gotta get this van running SOON. I'd really just like to rebuild it but I've never taken on a task that involved by myself before, and would hate to waste time and money. Plus no garage to work in So I'm wondering if:
1) is I can find an engine that runs for around a $1,000 or
2) can anybody help me in the rebuild, cuz I'd really like to learn how

I know most of you are super busy so I appreiciate any help of course
