engine question

« on: March 24, 2011, 07:31:37 AM »
I just bought a 71 ghia coupe.  The engine in it is new out of crate (versus a rebuild), with only around 700 miles on it since it was installed. The trouble is, it seems to have a serious lack of power compared to my other ghia.  Petal to the floor it isnt going past 65mph, and loses speed up a moderate incline.  According to the gauge it isnt breaking 3000 rpm.  I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts?

Timing/ carb issues is what i would check... also, re-check valve clearances... maybe a distributor that isn't advancing... could be a number of things.

If the timing is off, you could have the lack of power/ acceleration, but worse, you could be doing engine damage as well.

Check valve clearances, then points/ distributor, then timing (the first two directly affect this one), carb last.
