Ok,
Having a weird issue with my '63.
The accellerator pump area has a vacumm leak.
A BAD vacuum leak.
Has anyone ever heard of this before?
I thought it would just affect the accelleration, but it is also affecting the idle.
I spray carb cleaner in the pump area and idle goes to normal from a lope...
Wanted to come to the cruise tonight, but it looks like I'll be building a carb.
This sucks.

That is strange. Can't imagine  why the accel. pump would cause a vac. leak.  What about the base gasket ? I have seen them suck a chunk out of the base gasket due to being loose on the manifold or have a slight warp on the base of the carb. Just guessing.

Try Zen's sharping stone trick. Sharpie the whole thing and hone the ink off.

I really just need to pull the entire intake and cooling shroud off and / or install the dual carbs, but I just have no time.
@bugtech - I sprayed all around the base of the carb with no change in idle.
I sprayed the intake mating areas to the head (still scares me) and the rubber boot areas with no improvement.
When I spray at the pump area of the carb, it idles out just great for a second or two....
Augggh!
I may just go and buy another 30/31 today... But I'm cheap.
We'll see.
Was looking forward to seeing every one tonight.

Lamar in Dalton has a new pierburg (china) 34-3 for $175.
Any thoughts or experiences with this make?
I just sold the new empi I had with the bus so the only carbs I have laying around are the old non rebuilt 34's..(I have like 5 of them...)

34 pic 3 will need a adapter to bolt to a single port, bolts right on a dp intake, new is good BUT they are known to have idle issues and don't play well with a 009. If your going to buy new, I would get a 30/31 bolt it on, once dialed in its as close to set and forget as you can get with a carb on a air cooled engine IMHO. Non performance engine that is, anything else would get 40mm Webbers X 2.  I'm not a huge fan of the Dellorto's  although when set right and CLEAN they work nice too. Spend more on the linkage and be happy, crap linkage is just as bad as junk carbs. :P

Attack, Thanks, the engine feels like a 1641 - 1776, and I am running a 019 disto (better version of the 009) that doesn't like the 34 pict 3's I tried in the past.
I have a pretty good 34-3 that I took off the bus when I got it because the idle jet was plugged up.
(I have a rebuild kit somewhere for a carb and will attempt to just get by with replacing the accellerator pump diaphram. if that works then I may be ther tonight.
I am wanting to do the run up to hellen, but may not be in the beetle.

Maybe the adapter to carb gasket then. You will still need to pull the carb to see, it really shouldn't be possible for the accelerator pump to leak vacuum, only gas.  The pump should be full of gas, and in most cases there is a check valve if some sort to prevent venturi vacuum from pulling extra fuel under any condition other than accel.  Any leak should be a gas leak. there are a couple spots that can be bad vacuum leaks, since you already mentioned testing the base plate to intake, the next would be the adapter to carb, throttle shaft at carb, any of the removable plugs on the side or even a split vacuum port cap.

If not a bother bring them tonight.
If I do not get there then no harm done and I'll get them from you some other time.
I still want to come by and shoot the breeze about the tire Idea I have.

If this is the right pic, you can see above the screwdriver the adapte gasket I'm talking about.

It lives!
Some goon put 2 gaskets in the sp to dp adaptor area.
One was toast.
Flat spot was plastic nut on back was gone (melted....)
Fixed main wire to the starter - Let's call it Mr. Sparky.
Had to re thread the accelerator pump arm and broke it...
Then had to weld it together again, so like 4 hours later it purrs.
Made a KUSTOM adjuster for the accellerator pump.
It dumps good now and I have 0 hesitation - vroom vroom.
Gonna drive it to church tomorrow and test it out..
