Engine fixin

« on: December 03, 2006, 04:23:02 PM »
I was bored today so I decided to go tinker with stuff in the garage. That's sometimes a bad thing, but in this case what I'm tinkering with is already broken.

I have a long block with a plug blown clear out. The head seems to have had a crack that expanded causing the blow out. I've looked everything over and that what I think happened. Everything else seems to be fine. The piston on that side was a little encrusted with bits of melted aluminum but it didn't seem to damage it.The valves and rocker arms and everything seem fine.Of course the head is toast.

How much of this engine is useable? Should I replace the pistons, valves etc..? It was an ATK engine. The parts seem pretty good on it. Could I just slap another head on it and use the parts off this head?

This engine is unfamiliar to me It's a dual relief and maybe it's tapped for a full flow system? Not sure. Any ideas? If not no biggie I'm sure to see Rick some day when he wants his goodies.

You never know . . . you might put another head on it and get a lot of miles out of it . . . and then you might be wasting your time and effort and could ruin the rest of the good parts on the engine.

If the head cracked, I would assume that it has been overheated a few times.  I would be kind'a scared of the exhaust valves . . . they like to snap if they have been overheated too many times.  I've seen what one will do when the head breaks off at 65 mph . . .  you can ruin a lot of good parts in a few seconds.

If it were mine, I'd replace the cracked head and the exhaust valves all around and see what it would do.

Scott, Do what Zen said plus I would would take the "cuprit" cly off to inspect the piston/rings to be sure they are not stuck and the piston is not  gaulded on the sides.

Piston looks good all around everything turns free and smooth. This is that ATK motor that freaked out when new. The parts are very new inside not any wear on them. From whats left of the head It seems it was cracked next to the plug,I rekon detonation in that chamber wouldn't last long.

After reveiwing another treasure I got from Mr. Lockhart(a book) I decided that I do not have the tools to build these motors or the cleaning/prep equipment. Alot of measuring and cleaning to keep things right. I could redneck it but I believe I wont. With good planning I could salvage a few of these gems.

On another subject that type 3 case we claimed from the scrap looks good no warpage! To bad I dont need it.

I think soon it will be time for Grasshopper 2 to take lessons on how to build a motor. Maybe later how to build a transmission. :D

Scott(Grasshopper 2), ATK rebult engines were done in the Fatherland and in general were very good. I used a lot of them over the years and had 1 engine that gave trouble. ATK replaced it even through it was about 1000 miles out of warranty and they didn't want the bad engine back. I would go for it. Replace the bad head, all exhaust valves and the crank seal, cooler seals.
Grasshopper 1  or I can get you through an engine OK. The transmissions are a different animal with lots of tricks and feel and eyeball thingy things to deal with. I'm not sure where Grasshopper 1 is in his young career on tranny's but between the two of us ,we can shake a brain cell or two loose to get you on track and finaly remove all traces of "Riceritis".  I have a pile of tranny's we can practice on. They all need something done to them.
You need to buy the" clover leaf"guage to check and see what sizes the main brg. bores are in all those cases you have. Mid America has them. $9.00 or $10.00 I think.

I'll take you up on that offer. If you can guide me through this one I figure I can figure out what all I need to invest in for future builds. If you have some trannies to build,Ill take that class as weel at least you won't have to do the lifting.

Well, David, there you go again....Scott?...common sense?... What ARE you thinking?  I mean, he's a nice guy and everything, but Common Sense?  I wouldn't go that far....although, he did say that he got rid of that Corrado years ago, so maybe there's hope afterall.
Besides, I think that he's still reeling from air-cooled overload after working down at Jim's so much helping with the clean-out.
Easy, Scott...there's plenty of time to rebuild all of those engines.
Oh, and Scott...you don't know where a man might find a set of pop-out windows around here, do ya?
(inside joke, everybody....don't really need 'em)

Can't wait to get these home !  I wonder what they are ?
