Engine Compartment is getting Hot

« on: May 21, 2009, 07:20:01 PM »
I've noticed my engine compartment is getting really hot every time I stop. I'm missing the lower engine guard the one that sits over the exhaust pipes (see pic) and I'm wondering if this might be causing it. I know the fan is working. I have some left over heat exhaust tape from a motorcycle I used to have, can anybody think of any problems it would cause if I wrapped my exhaust pipes with this heat wrap? Does anybody have one of this engine guards?

What Fred said. You'll toast that motor without it. You need all the tins.

All the tin is important, but the tin at the rear of the engine is REALLY important.  After the air has cooled your engine it exits out the lower rear of the engine bay . . . but with the rear tin missing, the hot air will be pulled back into the top side of the engine and recirculate.  After a few trips around it's way to hot to absorb any more heat and you engine will keep getting hotter and hotter . . . at some point, something will snap, crack, pop, break or lock down.  So, like Big D and Bugnut said . . . Get the tin!!!

Did anybody mention how important the rear tin is.... it'll hurt a bug, but downright kill a bus if it ain't in there.

I'll say it one more time.   If VW didn't think this tin was important they wouldn't have spent the money to put it on there.

I got the tin for the bottom that covers the exhaust at Mainly Foreign car parts on Friday and put it on. I also wrapped the whole exhaust in some heat wrap to keep the temperature down. The combination of the two has made a huge difference on the engine compartment heat. I’m still missing the rear tin over the fan housing and I’ve read this isn’t as important as the bottom tin but I am planning on ordering one sometime in the near future.

Thanks
