Engine 1970 Bus

« on: April 20, 2010, 08:57:20 PM »
The engine on my 1970 bus (1600) died last week. It appears I’ve thrown a rod. I found a guy in knoxville with a 1500 he took out of his beetle and he had put 1600 pistons and jugs on it for sale for $500. My concern is that this won't work on my bus. From my understanding buses pre-71 everything should work. I'm I right? Just want to make sure before I pick it up.

Thanks

On early Bay window buses (68-71), you need a block with the three mounting points to bolt on the support bar at the rear.  If the block doesn't have one, you can get an adaptor that bolts on over the oil pump . . . but I'm a big fan of them.  I don't have any personal experiance with one, but the mount just doesn't look strong enough to support the engine for a long period of time.  Other than the mounting points, you shouldn't have a problem.

Those adapters will do a "number" on the oil pump mounting studs sometimes along with the oil leaks. Did the rod tear up the block or did it just burn up a bearing.
