Electronic Ignition

« on: May 24, 2009, 06:29:35 PM »
Someone gave me an electronic ignition conversion kit for a 009 distributor(see pic). It’s made by EMPI but it was FREE. I don’t have any instructions with it and I haven’t put one on before. I’ve looked online for some instructions but I couldn’t find any. I did install new points a few months ago and this appears pretty simple but I would prefer not to guess. Does anybody know where I can find some instructions?

I found a picture of one online and I was able to hook it up. I can't seem to get the timing set right. Can you do a static timing with an electronic ignition?

Nope no static timing...and theres probably a reason it was free. The original Pertronix brand are pretty decent. The Enpi ones???? Well you can guess. Sometimes the magnets get flipped in the lil ring part and sometimes they just dont work at all. A friend of mine bought one at a show put it in 10 minutes later and the timing was all over the place, The thing was junk and nobody takes back electronic parts...go figure.

electronic ignition is a great idea, you'll get quicker starts and a little better gas mileage.now with that said heres the scoop.when you get it installed,if you have a tach in your car,it'll never read correctly-the needle will jump around like crazy.when it goes bad and it will, you'll want to strangle the guy who gave it to you.hey when it goes bad i have another one you are welcome to

After installing a Pertronix unit in my bus, I became a big fan of electronic ignitions.  EMPI . . . that's another story.  But, hey, if it was free, give it a shot.  Just don't throw away the points and stuff to convert it back.  If (with EMPI, I would also say, not if, but WHEN) it goes out, you can throw the points back in a get home.

Static timing is great when your broke down on the side of the road with no cell phone service and no tools, but it should be used only to get you to someplace you can do it right.  Always set your timing on an air-cooled engine to 32 degrees before top dead center when the distributor (regardless of what kind) is under full advance.  I set the timing on my 009 with a Pertronix unit when I put it in the engine and haven't touched it since.  Every time I've checked it since then it's been dead on the money . . . you can't do that with points!  Of course, I've got the points, condensor and a screw in a baggy in the glove box just in case the unit goes out.  Mine has been in there at least 5 years now without a problem. But when they go, they go without warning . . . be ready.   8)
