After installing a Pertronix unit in my bus, I became a big fan of electronic ignitions. EMPI . . . that's another story. But, hey, if it was free, give it a shot. Just don't throw away the points and stuff to convert it back. If (with EMPI, I would also say, not if, but WHEN) it goes out, you can throw the points back in a get home.
Static timing is great when your broke down on the side of the road with no cell phone service and no tools, but it should be used only to get you to someplace you can do it right. Always set your timing on an air-cooled engine to 32 degrees before top dead center when the distributor (regardless of what kind) is under full advance. I set the timing on my 009 with a Pertronix unit when I put it in the engine and haven't touched it since. Every time I've checked it since then it's been dead on the money . . . you can't do that with points! Of course, I've got the points, condensor and a screw in a baggy in the glove box just in case the unit goes out. Mine has been in there at least 5 years now without a problem. But when they go, they go without warning . . . be ready.
