Electrical Help!!!

« on: April 07, 2009, 09:42:40 AM »
Ok, my son's 77 camper is looking better every day, but I can't get a few electrical things working and would love some help.

Blinkers - I have gotten the tail lights, brake lights and backup lights to work most of the time, but I am having no luck at all with the blinkers. The flasher switch was apart so I put it back together, suggested on another forum, and wire tied it. The arrows on the dash do nothing also. Is all the blinker function in this switch?

Wipers - They worked fine up untill about 2 weeks ago now they do nothing.

If there is anyone out there that has been there done that and would have any suggestions or be willing to take a look at it please let me know. The bus runs so I could bring it to you. I could buy the beer or something.

I take it you are talking about emer. flasher switch in the dash ?    If the plastic piece comes off the metal case, Its toast. That thing is loaded down with little spring loaded contacts . The odds of that switch ever working again is nil so start there.

I got a good used one from Alvin in Dalton Ga.  $9 and it even had a platic ZIP already on it!
It was for my 1972 Beetle - Man that was a PAIN to put in by myself.  If a bus one is that hard, get an assistant to hold it into place while you screw on the bezel around the shaft.

All this talk about putting light switches back together makes me a bit nervous....

I have seen more than one electrical fire start up in a beetle / ghia due to a light switch popping apart, the hot lead grounding, etc, etc.....

At least with a bus, the fuel tank isn't located right there....

Thanks for the help. I guess I will call around and see who has what.

Oh yea, I keep a fire extinguisher between the front seats just in case.

Kermy has one of those really large 3' high 8" diam ones under the Zbed.
After hearing about too many fires, I decided to get the largest one I could find...
Still looking for tires for the Westy.

Having a big extigushier is good, but like Rick said, if it's under the bed, it's too far away.  If it catches fire, the bus will be burnt to a crisp by the time you get the extingusher out.  You need one you can reach from the driver's seat . . . and maybe a second one you can get to by opening the rear hatch.  Getting the fire put out quickly is the only way to save it.
