Dual “Quiet” Exhaust

« on: April 05, 2010, 08:46:10 AM »
I decided to replace the exhaust on my bus this weekend. My old exhaust was rough and the heat exchangers pretty much looked like swiss cheese. I put J-tubes on the bus and took off the heat exchangers as well as put an EMPI Dual “Quiet” Exhaust on the bus (I know EMPI is crap but I got it cheap). The attached link is my bus running with the new exhaust. I’m almost afraid to drive it the way it sounds. Prior to this new exhaust it just sounded like an old exhaust with the occasional hole in it (a loud sputter but a sputter none the less). Now my bus has a nasty squeal to it. Any ideas as to what might have caused this?

I think you will find that you have a cooling fan rubbing in the housing .  Take the fan belt off and spin the gen. with you hand and see if it is scrubbing  Check the gen. tie down strap  and see if its loose or not even there.  If you have a tie down strap( You have to have a strap) loosen it and grab the gen.pulley  and pull it toward  you or push away from you and see if the noise goes away. Find a happy spot and lock the strap down. Then make sure the housing screws are tight ( right behind the intake on both sides). How in the world did this happen by just replacing the muff ?

That was it. Ret. Bugtech you put Click and Clack to shame. I'm not sure what I did to cause it to start rubbing but with a little adjustment it sounded great. Thanks again.

After I put the new exhaust on I noticed that there was hot air blowing out of the hole listed below and the air has a lot of force. Is this normal or is this something I need to have addressed - plug?

Thanks,

Sid

Nut for a piece of cooling tin should be in there, but looks like it is gone.
Since you do not have the little piece of cooling tin, just cover it up with aluminum duct tape or such.
The air you feel is cooling air leaking from around the heads.
Just cover the hole...
Good luck,
KC :)
