drum brakes

« on: December 31, 2010, 11:05:22 AM »
searched the archives, but didn't see anything.
On this 74 Thing, was going to check the brake pads over the weekend since the pedal seems low.
When I get ready to pull the brake drum off the wheel, are there bearings inside the drum that come out also?

I see where I have to pull the cotter pin and take the big nut off, but was looking at the manual and looked like there was bearings inside the brake drum.
I could probably adjust first, but just curious.

Of course the manual doesn't cover the thing, but does everything else.
thanks
ron

The Thing is just like your '70 Beetle.  Front brgs will come off with the drum although the inside brg can get stuck on the spindle. You might have to prod a little but it will come off.  The rear brgs ,seals will stay on the stub axle There are 2 rear axle brgs on each axle . You will see the outer brg seal when you pull the drum off.  You will notice that the rear drum is wider where the shoe contacts the drum but it still uses the standard brake shoes as on your '70 Bug. Take good care of those rear drums. They are kind of pricey and are Thing only. Those manual should show you how to do all of this. Same as Beetle. You can inspect the shoes with a small flash light while looking though the quarter size hole on the outside of the drum.  You adjust all the brakes though the same hole.
