Door handles

« on: March 21, 2005, 12:10:09 AM »
Only after installing all the right door handles on the left side of the car and the left door handles on the right side of the car did I realize they aren't interchangeable. So after switching them, I have working door handles again (except for the driver's side, which I'll have to pick up at Al Johnson tomorrow).

The doors are still a little tough to open, though, is this something that can be adjusted?

If they are anything like the latches on bugs and buses, once the latch gets dry and starts binding you'll start having trouble getting the doors to open even when the handles are doing their job.  While you have the door handles off, spay some PB Blaster in on the latch (the mechanical part of it inside the door) . . . install the handle and see if it improves after you work it a few times.  If it did, pull the handle back off and squirt JUST A LITTLE of that spray white grease on the latch.

I can try that I guess.

The doors open, you just have to put a lot of pressure on the trigger to make it do so. It isn't easy to do with just one hand.

Also, are the locks on the front doors easy to swap out?

Well I tried swapping the tumblers when I installed the new handle on the driver's side, but my key won't turn it. I guess I've screwed something up.

So Zen, I'm going to need some "key assistance" from you...namely, making it so one key will work my doors, ignition, and trunk.

But hey, at least I have (semi) working door handles again...
