Does it have any accompanying noises?
Does it do it only (or worse) when cold?
Thanks.

It either needs to be greased at the speedo end (don't over tighten the screw fitting- just tight enough), the whole cable needs to be grease, OR the inner cable got bent when fishing it through the front spindle.

The last one would require another cable, but more carefully installed.

Some other thoughts that just came to me are also the dust cap on the front left wheel- needs to have a square hole in it for the cable- NOT rounded out.

The other thing is that if the cable had previously been broken, then the speedo probably didn't run for a while, causing the grease to cake up or harden. Take the cable off the back of the speedo and gently WD-40 up in there to help knock it loose.

the issue is, that I have no tools to look at it, im not very confidend with the garage who did the job. so do you have a recommendation where I can bring my car??
so regarding cold or warm, I drove thje car fromm Ooltewah to east brainered and it didn't changed. it is a brand new cable and maybe bad installed, without taking the tank out.

thanks andreas

In all seriousness, you probably don't need any tools to check half of those things. The part at the speedometer can be loosened by hand and sprayed out with WD40 and greased. The bottom half would only need a visual inspection short of pulling the clip and looking at the dust cover.

It's a very simple system and shouldn't require many tools at all. Mostly a pair of needle nose pliers and maybe a screwdriver, but that would mostly be to wrestle the clip off.

As for a good shop that works on older air-cooled VWs . . . there really isn't much in the area.  There are still a few guys around that will work on their established customers cars, but they won't take on new customers.  I think ASBug knows of a couple of shops in the Dalton area that might take a look at it for you.  But, like Nick said, it's a pretty simple system and doesn't require a lot of tools.  What year is your Beetle?

It's a convertible, so it's a Super Beetle which, like Travis said, uses a longer cable than a Beetle.  Also, if I remember correctly from when I worked on Joy's 75 convertible's speedometer, the Fuel Injected cars had some sort of box the cable fastened into, and a short cable that connected the box to the speedometer.  The 71/72 Supers had a flat windshield so they may or may not use the same cable as a Beetle . . . in other words, even if the cable you got was for a Super Beetle, there might have been as many as 3 different lenghts.  If the cable is too short, it might still reach from the wheel to the speedometer, but it could be in a bind causing the jumping.  Most likely, however, it just needs lubricating or the square end of the cable is slipping in the hole in the dust cap at the hub.

My 70did the same thing I replaced the cable and was still doing it and then it broke that one too,  then I asked for help and learned  that it was the speedo needed disassembled, cleaned and greased. I was thought how.

I believe you can get the housing and a new cable from an earlier Super and replace the whole 2 speedo cable + box assembly with just one cable.
The box was only to triggger a light in the dash for you to check your EGR.
I'd bet dollars to donuts you do not even have an EGR in the car right now...

Glad to see it's still a fuel injected beetle.
