Cv joint bolts

« on: May 26, 2013, 02:53:01 PM »
Any helpful hints on how to break these bolts loose with out stripping the head out? I've been letting the soak in PB blaster.

First thing you do is to CLEAN the hole out COMPLETLY. I mean COMPLETLY. If you are using the serrated allen type socket on a 3/8 ratcet, Tap the head of the bolt with hammer(like driving a nail) then tap the socket in with a hammer and hold it straight and start pulling. If that doesn't work then its time for a really good pair of Vice-Grips.  ;D  I have Air so I use my 3/8 impact wrench. They can be little "boogers" sometimes even with a air wrench. Good luck and let us know. You are not the first one to have this problem .

Well Ret.bugtech, just as you said cleaned then right up and they come right out. I know It's my vw and all but 4 of the bolts are not going back in. Should I replace them with vw cv joint bolts or would standard metric socket heads be ok?

For future reference on this incase any one else ever has this same problem, a dental pick set is your friend here. The more "crap" you get out of the socket, the better the odds of not stripping out the head.
Just my $0.02 here.
