confused distributor question

« on: October 08, 2006, 07:54:54 PM »
Little confused, maybe someone can shed a litttle light. Have a 70 model bug with the stock Bosch 205 dist. vacum advance.
So I'm reading and think that a SVDA dist is the same thing since this is also vacum advance dist. Then I getting reading another site that says the SVDA is not stock and shouldn't be used with my 30 pict stock carb, due to the curve is longer or different.
Is a Single Vacum Distributor Advanced(SVDA) different than the stock vacum advanced dist?
If I need to replace mine, (something is whacked on it, vacum cannister or plate inside the dist) Do I stick with looking for a stock dist or go with a "SVDA"?
Been to several sites and all they have is the 009(which I'm staying away from) except for CIP in which they have a VW Mexican SVDA dist and should work with a stock 30 or 34 pict carb and should work with all Beetles and one made by "Bruck Germany" which claims the same thing.
Or does anyone have a good one for sell?

thanks
Ron

Ron, I don't have a clue what kind of vacumn advance dist. they say is not stock. What is this site ? Iwould like to check it out.
Your car came with a vacumn advance dist. when new. There is a lot of vac. dist you can use that has the proper curve.
If want to, send me your dist. and I will free it up for you if you can't find one.

Ths is a FAQ from the Aircooled.net site where he discussses Dists. The person tells the difference between stock and "SVDA"

http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/distributor.htm

Maybe I'm trying to read into it, to much.

would like for you to look at it and also see if you would go back through this carb..
I can mail or drop off Saturday when we ride through..
Thanks
Ron

Ron, Looked at the web site and he is correct. We found out the 009 with 34mm carb wouldn't work years ago. We could use ( and I have forgot the #s) Dist. from the '68 with the retard/advance ports with the retard port blocked off, '69 dist. and of course the original '70 as you have with no problem. I'm not going to get in a one legged butt kicking contest over a degree or two as long as you don't exceed max. advance
You can drop your goodies off if you are passing through and I will see if we can save your dist. Are talking about this coming Sat. ?

It was also the earlier and later model bugs that I wondered about as well since it lookd like they had a retard built in as well..

yes, was looking at this Saturday the 14th. Will be going through early to Hixson then maybe back through around noonish or 1.

I could UPS them up tomorrow if that helps.. otherwise, will need to get your number.. If you would like me to mail, would need to get your address as well.

Thanks
Ron
