Cold air question

« on: November 19, 2008, 10:57:29 PM »
Ok this is weird. Yesterday i drove to work and the bug is running great. All the electrical was great and even my heat was going good. Then when i left at around 10:00pm it started fine etc then down the road i had to turn and as i pushed up the lever to turn nothing happened. Well i tried it again and again and nothing. Being late and cold i waited till this morning and went out to check it. Well i started the car and tried the turn signal switch and it worked perfectly no matter how many times. I thought ok i have it running some how. Now tonight when i came out from work to come home it did it to me again. No turn signals. ..... What i want to know is can the cold air affect the turn signal switch etc some how and when the sun is up and warms the car up it works.........

Did you testthe blinker in like conditions, i.e. with all the lights on, brake lights engaged, etc.  Sounds like a short again.

You may be correct scott on the condinsation in the relay. I went out about 15 minutes ago and started the car. All the lights worked correct and the blinkers " blinked " as they should. Is there any old school or even new school fix for this like take out the relay and wrap it in plastic etc to keep out the condinsation and then reinstall it ? Because i do not have the $50.00 bucks for a new relay. Unless anyone here has an old working one lying around that i can get replacing it at this time is out of the question.

did not spray it today and left the car home today and drove my main car. I got home a few minutes ago and tried the blinkers. No go on them so it is definately the cold. Do i just spray the outside of the relay and the switch or do i have to open it up and spray the inside also.....

I would just stick that little tube in there somewhere and give her a squirt. WD wont hurt electronics.

I never had any of those problems with my '74 SB I had about 12 years ago.  I always had problems of my outside door locks freezing up.  Always had to carry a cigarette lighter with me.

They make a Elect. contact cleaner in a spray can.  Radio Shack sells it I think and maybe some auto parts stores. It sure wouldn't hurt to try it.

Another option: Ditch your hazard lights and rewire off a 64 diagram. Use cheap $4 three prong flasher realys from autozone and never buy another one of those big black boxes again!  They have a wiring diagram on samba for this modification.

Hey Scott, i might have to try that one with the cheap flasher relay from autozone. I never have needed to use my emergency flashers so no big loss there. Will try the WD and then the new flasher relay. If i get the relay i am comming over too your house with the bug and you can help me do it right so i do not have to rant and rave here............
