Clutch Question

« on: February 12, 2007, 05:04:34 PM »
Since I have taken over ownership of my 67 Bus it has probably been driven more in the past couple months than it has been driven in 15 years.  It has 95k original miles on it and alot of the parts seem to be original.  I decided to pull the engine and do a few tune ups before it really gets some miles this summer.  Before I pulled the engine yesterday I noticed the Clutch pedal was not returning to the full upright position.  It would stop about halfway.  I could also hear what I would call a spring noise.  I looked at the wing nut on the end of the clutch cable and it is adjusted down a little more than halfway on the thread.  I continued on and removed the engine.  My question is, How can I tell if I need to change out the Pressure plate, Clutch disc, T.O. Bering, or release spring?  The pressure plate is the style that has 3 levers with springs.
Thanks

I just run 'em till they break and there is no question about their condition.    But, if you do that, keep in mind that you may have to pull the engine out several times vs. fixing everything that is about to go at once.  And there is this law . . . some guy named Murphy wrote it . . . it says that none of this stuff can ever break on payday when you have a couple of days off and nothing to do and you are sitting in your driveway with an extra car availble.    8)

I think if you look at the clutch you can tell,Look at the studs inside the clutch if the surface is less than1/8 of an inch replace it. If you replace the clutch replace the pressure plate. Spint the bearing if it doesn't spin free or the grease is gone in it replace it. You can run em till they die but unless you like pulling the motor if it's out replace it.

I had the same sort of problem with my dune buggy. Turns out it was the clutch tube in the tunnel had come loose at the end and the cable was hiting the edge of the tube. Had to cut into the tunnel and re-weld it back in position. I don't know if a bus is set up the same way. Just my experience.

If I were going to go to the trouble to pull the engine out and not knowing any history on the clutch, It would get pressure plate, disc, T.O. brg and possibly a crank seal. These things can be bad or real close to conking out and you can't tell sometimes by just looking.
I would tempted to look at the cable with the noise you hearing.
Do it all now and you will not have to worry for a long time
Oh , take a look at the clutch return spring around the lever on the tranny. Broken ?

Yeah, but you can meet some of the most interesting people on the side of the road working on your old VW . . .       Plus, you never know, you might just find a good bumper that fits your Volkswagen when you pull off the interstate to work on it!  8)

Im with Zen about not fixng it till you have too,  Breaking down is fun to do.  I think there is a song there..   I have got to meet  lots and lots of neat folks.  When I'm Lonely,  I just pull over and pop the motor hatch and Presto.  I'm Popular.  Better yet,   act like your conked out at a red light and you will have a bunch a strangers push you off the road. Its like Having a team of Human horses at you beck and call.    SC

It turns out that the release spring was just worn out and boy was it fun putting a new one on.  That clutch pedal bounces right back up now!

That would be the one.  It took alot of extra grunt power but it finally decided to give up and go where I wanted it.

Wedged a socket ?  If you had cleaned the wing nut off and put a little grease on the lever, you could have adjusted the clutch with your pinkey.
