Clutch Chatter

« on: October 20, 2010, 12:02:16 AM »
Ok, so I've tried all sorts of things to eliminate the clutch chatter and I've search this site and the samba for answers. I've read that the bowden tube, broke clutch tube, trans mounts, clutch cable, throwout bearing, pressure plate, clutch disc, flywheel and what not can all cause this problem.I will say that the bowden tube was never on this bug but the clutch chatter is a relatively new thing. I found this http://www.volksfolks.org/forums/index.php?topic=3517.0 thread that indicated it occurs in 1st and reverse. My problem only occurs in 1st; reverse is perfect.  Would this indicate that a trans mount is the problem? Or does anyone have any suggestions? I have a spare bowden tube that I plan on throwing in tomorrow (if i can find it). I don't really want to just start replacing parts (because I don't have the money to replace EVERYTHING and I will keep all the parts- only 1 would be bad and I won't know which one!). I am enacting a group think session!

No Tube ?   I can not believe that car wasn't jumping off the ground in all gears . Reverse would be the worse chatter because as you force the tranny down up by the nose cone . This gives you a little slack in the clutch cable. Put the tube on but make sure you have  a bow (pre-load)in it. I would bet that fixes it.

Dang !!!!   HELLO,   I can't believe it took you from July till now to believe what we told you. Pay attention. You failed to tell us you didn't have a pre-load tube at all.

well the fact that it was only happening in first and it drove fine with no tube had me thinking it was something else. Like I said, I'm gonna throw the bowden tube in to see if it fixes it, I was curious if the only in first thing meant one of the trans mounts was letting the trans torque over more one way but not the other

You could have something else wrong, but it is a guarantee that the clutch will chatter if you don't have the Flex-Tube. Put the Bug on your Dads lift(you lucky dog) to do the job and while you are under the car could check the mounts with a pry bar or a really big screw driver. If the tube doesn't fix it and your mounts are good you may have a warped clutch disc or a pressure plate.  I can't imagine you having a crankshaft seal leaking this soon but you do have a tranny main shaft seal behind the T.O.brg putting some fluid on the clutch. This will show up dripping on the ground most of the time.

I replaced both seals, the crank and trans when I got the gland nut off. They appear to be holding up. I was discussing this with the brother n law and he was saying that when he lifted his trooper, the double jointed driveshaft would shudder from binding. Wel, I lifted the rear of the baja... Could the CV act like a crappy clutch problem if it is maxed and/or bad? It does feel like it's coming from on side...

I didn't know we were talking about your Baja.  What did you do to lift the body adjust the spring plates ? If you just lifted the body off the pan it would not affect the CV's. It shouldn't have any effect on the joints if you have the plates on the stops. I haven't heard a CV "chatter" ever.   They Knock and Pop and do it under a load like pulling up a grade and taking off at a stop light and if they were really bad they could make noise all the time without ever touching the clutch pedal. If you have some kind of monster dia.  tire it would be hard on the clutch as its like starting in 2nd gear which in turn will overheat the clutch badly if you were stuck in traffic and starting and stopping all the time or playing in the woods. This would put some lovely blue spots( hard spots) on the flywheel and pressure plate causing a "chatter" sometimes.
On the Trooper I would bet your Bro-in law lifted the body off the axles creating a steeper angle from the tranny to the axle. These things had U-joints and not CV joints on the driveshafts. At lease mind did.

Clutch chatter i don't think could be mistaken for a CV joint issue.  Click, pop, yes, not chatter that i have ever known.   8)

do they always make the bowden tube a cut to fit item? I slapped it up there but it had nearly a 3 inch sag in it. I couldn't get the nut on the cable! So I pulled it and cut about an inch off and put the front colar back on. Stacked some washers and the cable fell off the pedals... Good thing this bug had a lazy PO who drilled a hole in the tunnel for the lazy CO! A screwdriver slid the cable back on. Buttoned it all up and took it for a drive. Just like you said: the flex tube stops all that crazy jerking... I just didn't want to do it. Wish I had done the flex tube BEFORE the gland nut fiasco... But atleast I have all new seals, engine stud, and lots of practice with switching the clutch discs out.

now lets all say it together: 'i told you so!!!'

Go buy the one that fits. They are suppose to have about a 2 inch bow.  The one you sawed off will more than likely saw your clutch cable in half. I hope you greased up the cable.
