Cheap Retractable Seat Belts for Your Bay Window Bus

How many times have you wished you had retractable seat belts in your bus?  With very little modification, the belts out of an early Chevy S-10 will bolt right in!

You have to use the right side on the left and the left side on the right, and you have to remove the plastic cover over the buckle end and remove the retractable stop button from one side of the belt so it wind in a little further.  You also have to put a couple of thick washers under the shoulder piviot to space it out from the door trim enough to let it swing free.  I'm going to use the old metal strap from the original belts for an extension to the buckle end when I get time . . . that will make them a little easier to buckle.  I also need to figure out how to replace the GM logo with a VW logo, but other than that, they work great!

You can get them from Pull-A-Part ( www.pullapart.com ) for $6 a side.  But, check them and make sure they work (unwind/wind) before you go to the trouble to pull them out . . . I only have one side until I can get back to the junk yard.  Here's another hint . . . if the retractable part is in standing water, you probably need to look for another one.

By the way, these belts are found on 1982-1993 Chevy S-10 and GMC S-15 regular cab pickups.  The ones from an S-10 Blazer or S-15 Jimmy are different.  I didn't look at the ones in an extended cab, they may be different as well.  The ones I got are self contained and you can bolt them in using the original VW seat belt mounting bolts.

That looks pretty cool.  You don't actually have to mount the base unit backwards from the O.E. mounting to get it on the other side do you?  It doesn't look like it in the photos, but I would guess if you did the inertia portion of the lock would not work.  Not tryin' to rip on ya, just wondering.

Now that I've gone back an looked at it, and compaired it to my S-10, they are mounted on the right side.  I just assumed that the one that was rusty and locked up was the passenger side, since it was in standing water.

They aren't mounted pointing straight ahead, but I don't think that would matter for the inertia lock.  I took the one that was locked up apart to try to free it up.  The inertia lock works off of two little pengilums that can swing in any direction.  For myself, it doesn't matter anyway.  By the time I get them pulled out far enough to wrap around my big ***, there isn't any more belt to unwind!

I bought new German seat belts from GoWesty. Not cheap by any means, but for matters of safety I didn't want to cut corners. These are extremely high quality and they work and fit great. Highly recommended.

i could use some of these! Being short has disadvantages when you are strapped in by a stationary belt and you are trying to reach for third gear... even with a shift extender!

you werent kidding though.. $140 per side! Geez

Yes, they're expensive. I saved my beans. Lucked out on a 15% off sale from GoWesty, so that helped a little. I'm convinced they're the best you can buy. Hopefully I'll never have to find out for sure though.
