Changing out my brake booster vacuum line....

« on: May 12, 2010, 11:35:16 PM »
So I'm wanting to replace my brake booster vacuum line in my 74 bus after noticing it torn in several places, but I dont know where to buy the stuff.... the line used on these things from the factory is metal reinforced and wrapped in cloth.. is there anything of decent quality to be had here in the states? I looked online at german supply, but theirs is 12 bucks per foot and currently out of stock  :o

in the meantime, duct tape will have to do until I can find a suitable replacement....

anyone got any ideas?

The ASBug Has alot of vaccume lines on it.
I used the transmission lines.  They are somewhat reinforced and will not completely collapse.
Been on there for 3 years and no cracking yet and lots cheeper than the OEM german stuff.

Good luck on finding "good stuff" cheap.  Keep those lines "patched" good until you find something. Your engine will run ill as a Hornet with any of those hoses leaking.

it already does sound ill... every time I press the brakes, the rpm's drop to about 500.... engine sounds like its got a big cam in it but I know its too much air leaking in.... I had to up the idle to compensate at the red lights.... :o

I would really look into the transmission line.
I have had no issues in over 3 years.
Save up the dough for the expensive stuff, but I haven't needed it.

Homer is a late '73 (according the date on the door post it should be a '74, but it's a '73 VIN) so it should have the same brake set up as your '74.  I don't know exactly what a previous owner (Michael Jackson) did to the booster, but it now runs a Super Beetle master cylinder.  It's bolted on the booster, but there is no vacuum hooked to it.  As long as I keep the back brakes adjusted properly, they work just fine.  Just a word of warning though, this may not work outside of the "triangle."   8)
