Carb Question

« on: December 06, 2008, 07:03:08 PM »
A quick question on a carb swap. I swaped out the carb that was giving me problems with another and the car slowly started but it started. The question is that when i do start it the tube in the very top round section where the air breather goes on just shoots gas out all over the place. My old carb never did this. Is there some thing wrong with the carb or what. I have cleaned the other one i had on there up and will most likely put it back on but would like any advice before i do that. Oh does any one have an intake manifold that will fit my 1969 single port. The godfather looked at it the other day and said the maniflod was for a bus so i need one for a bug.........

If gas is overflowing out the top, you have stuck float shut off valve. Sometimes you can give a sharp rap on top of the carb right by where the fuel line hooks up or replace the valve.
You can run the intake you have OK, Its just when your pump conks out that when its going to be a booger bear to change out

The difference is the height of the "standpipe" that the carb sits on.   This manifold was used on the type-2 engines that had a gov/housing between the manifold and the carb.   I notice that it had a spacer to raise the carb to the proper level.   Being shorter you would have a hard time to change out a fuel pump.
I would change the fuel pump over to a angle pump /push rod when his original pump broke.  This would be easier to do than changing out the intake manifold.
There is nothing wrong with this intake as far as running the engine OK.

Ok i got the carb swaped and the Float valve problem taken care of. The car starts and " runs ". What i need now is to find some one that can help me stop the backfiring and such. As i do not have a timming light and the fully needed knowlege to adjust the carb to where it needs to be to get the car back on the street. If any one will help i will be most greatfull. I would bring it to you but sence i do not trust the car to get there as it sits it would have to be done here. Oh Scott as for doing this work on it as i am " selling it " there is a problem with that. In 3 weeks i have not had any calls etc on it so i guess i will be keeping it. Besides i may need it after i move to Alabama in a bit......
