Car talk puzzler

Today the cartalk guys  had a puzzler about a VW microbus.  The story is that they are moving a cast iron stove and the bus can't get up a steep hill that has snow or ice on it.  The driver goes around the back, opens the engine door,  does something..  Then the bus is able to climb the snowy hill,   What did the driver do?  SC

He gave the recoil starter a tug and started the engine!

What?  Your bus doesn't have a recoil starter?

Well I looked it up.   What you do is unplug the coil wire,  then run up the hill on the starter.   Something about the wheels spin due to too much torque  and the starter runs the wheels nice an even and slow. .   How about that?  Turn your bus into an EV.    SC

Sounds great for the starter and the battery!  I used to pull the dead one into my garage that way.

I heard the cartalk show this Saturday,
They also said you could pull a couple plug wires to reduce the torque and inferred that when has a micro bus ever had a problem with too much torque.     SC

I've used the starter to walk Homer up to a gas pump or get it off the road after running out of gas.     However, if the engine is running and you don't have enough basic skill to use the gas and clutch to keep from spinning the tires you need to just wait until the ice and snow melts.    And if you're using the starter to move it any distance at all, especially if it's uphill and you're carrying a cast iron stove, you better have a GOOD battery . . . and another good one for a back-up!  And this would work MUCH better if you took out the spark plugs.  It might sound good in theory, but I say this one is an urban ledgend . . .

Zen, I decided to remove Stupie's pistons and run Stupie off the battery.  It will be the cheapest EV ever  made.  I know smart things!.   SC

I don't think I would worry about taking the pistons  out of Stupie.  He will do it by himselve soon
