The autostick has a torque converter that drives a clutch that drives a three speed manual transmission.  The clutch operates automatically via a vacuum pod that kicks in and out by an electric control switched by points in the shift lever.  From everything I've read, you don't want an torque converter in an electric vehicle.

That old Rabbit convertible in Noble for $300 has a manual tranny . . . and I'd bet that whoever owns it would take a few dollars less since it's been for sale for so long . . . it's light and it's got plenty of room for batteries . . .  8)

Why would you want to go to the trouble to TRY to make a autostick work ?    Like Zen said the clutch is operated by vacumn/elec.    The vac. comes from the intake on the original gas engine.  There is a vac.operated servo mounted on the side of the tranny which in turn is connected via metal arm to the clutch.
Where would you get the vac. from ? A separate pump ?   Why would you want to sit at a traffic light with your electric motor running. After looking at my shop manual,it looks like you would have to make a completly new "output" shaft if you try to avoid using the torque converter. By this time your autostick ceases to be an autostick. I thought the name of this game was when you stop everything stops.
As far as the all electric drive goes, I Think the tech. is not there yet.
Even with Chevy coming out with the "Volt" ,They state that you could maybe get UP TO 40 miles before the petrol engine has to be used to recharge the batterys. I thought they were a All electric. They haven't mention'd anything about cost per mile I don't think, plus the cost of the car and replacement batteries when the time comes.
VW and Benz new TDI develoments are already kicking hybrids in the butt . If they would just get them out to the public.
ALL electric cars will be just fine when they have a battery that will go 300 miles or better and can be recharged in 10min. Isn't Honda playing around with this idea about charging batteries from a hydro/cell ?

I thought a torqe converter was a big round wheel thing?  Cant I take it out.  I don't need a clutch any way.  I  could fill the converter with sand so that it does not slip.  Maybe stick a 8 penny nail in it.  Then,   just couple to the shaft and toot toot .  I'm Electromobileing
