Calling the GODFATHER!

« Reply #15 on: March 29, 2006, 12:40:42 AM »
Darn I just took the 800 watt stereo out! I do have a cd player in the glovebox with an ipod on it.
I do agree not to give a rats @SS about what people think of it. I know from the begining you cant please all. But I do have standards that won't let me massacre a 67. I like coppers ride and I will definetly check it out when I can. thanks for the info I'm sure I'll drive you nuts with questions. As far as people giving me greif its a 67 with herbies graphics and a driver/not show quality. trust me I get alot of comments good and bad. It's just the nature of the beast. I wouls like to do another bug but the cash could get tight and this is it. So I want it good the 1st time.I have way to much money in this bucket for it to look this way  .

Now I understand that.I would absolutely keep the car as original as possible because you take it's history away from it. Factory cars should be left alone as much as possible.Slammed to the ground extra large wheels etc.Bugtech I was just telling bugnut do it like he want's assuming his taste is good enough to know.I don't like ricer cars either. There is a difference in adding a little bit of your own touch and going overboard with a factory car.Due to what I have, the rules are slack I would imagine for sure lol.I think if you help him when he asks he will be fine.Back in the mid 70's I had a 71 super beetle. We went everywhere in it.Gas was cheap.I could fill up for $4.50.I wonder why we alway's had to take my car.I will go to VW Stories to finish the rest of it.BugTech come on over lol

Hey COPPER, how far are you from Chattanooga? I was thinking starting with the chasis and building on the motor while it was going back and forth. I could trailer the body to paint.
I'm sure I'll freak when they tell me a price on all this.
BTW your bug looks alot like I pictured mine. The color sets it off nice.I can't wait to see it. Please tel me your coming to bugapalooza?
As for me I'll be in this little bug.

I am in Tallapoosa, Ga. about 2 hours south of Chattanooga. I have the time approved off for the dates of the show, but we had one man quit and are short. Another operator who has some health problems went out 2 days ago, but it looks like he will be back next week. If nothing else happens I will be there. I look forward to meeting you too. I can put you in contact with the people I mentioned. All of these men should be at the show anyway. I know there are others who may be closer to you and can do great work. I only made the recommendation of these folks from my personal experience.

As far as technical assistance, I am not a good source of information. I can recommend vendors.    On our restoration I was only the provider of the $$$$. That is the reason I mentioned the folks I did for those who want to have the work done by someone else for whatever reason. Trust me if I had the expertise and the needed equiptment to do a restoration, I would. The bottom line is I DON"T!! So I got the best I knew of to do it. It would be nice to be able to say " I did it all." My son did much of the work on the restoration. It kept him off the streets for 2.5 years and focused on something during his early teen years. That was one reason for the project. plus it gave him "his car."

Now I will admit it right off I did try to take a shortcut on getting an engine fast off of the net and got screwed down tighter than a submarine escape hatch underwater.

I really don't have a problem with custom/cal look .Its only when you see someone take a totaly intact, original split window Bug and stuffs a 2180 cc engine in and slams the poor thing to the ground, slaps on a set of BRM wide wheels and tires, cut the dash up to install a 1000 watt sound system that makes my skin crawl.

 :-k Let's see???

We don't have a split
We do have a 2276cc engine
We did not slam the 67 (Update: We did lower it some??)
We do not have BRM's
We did not cut up the dash to install any radio

Whewwwwwwwww!!!!  8)

I guess your skin won't crawl when you see the car Godfather!!!  The 2276 may make it tingle a little...

Moe, You have proven the point that a person can build a Bug with some "Gitty-up" and great looks without be destructive. I guess my motto would be : Don't do anything that you couldn't reverse.

Well CopperJewell you know your limitations.I'm not an engine man myself.I have things subbed out that I can't do.That's why people don't believe the money I have in a dunebuggy lol.Yes I should be ashamed. But when you are working all the time when I was there is no time to get it done even if you were good at it.So inside engine jobs have to be done by someone else. What happened to the engine you got off the internet?

I don't think I have ever seen copper jewels bug in person but it looks nice by what I see.I'm just a bystander.I'm not in the running on the beetles.I would kind of like to have a duel cab transport or a 21 window bus to play with but those really get expensive if you are trying to show one.The transport wouldn't have to be perfect just no rust.I remember my dad's business bought a new doublecab back in the 60's. Think it was a 65 for a work truck. But I didn't ever see any type of work they used it for.It was more of a company truck like if you had a sofa or something. His company also bought three beetles as company car's to save gas. That was part of their salary of three guy's working there. They got a loaner car(VW) to drive and a gas card.Kind of a loyality thing back then. They put in alot of long hours back then.I remember one of the employee's talked my dad into getting him a carman ghia instead of the beetle. He was 6'5".He had to get a shoe horn to get in.I bought his loaner car after 3 years. That's where my first bug came in to play.

   Thanks guys for the kind words. Copper Jewel is a nice ride, but it has its little flaws too. We started out with a  limited budget but as we got going increased it,(sounds like our government does'nt it) well I confess, I increased it. Whatever Josh wanted I asked if it was the "best part" etc. The weak part was the pans. I should have spent a little more and made it a little cleaner, but we are happy with the car as it is.

Godfather, I can't wait to meet you sir. You need to write a tech book, an up to date one with good digital photos etc. I appreciate the time you take in answering questions and sharing your knowledge. See you folks at the show!!!!!

[-o<  Please Lord, let me make this one!!!

I'm for it! Well Copper Jewel we all do the same. It's like painting the inside of a house. You say you are going to fix up two rooms(painting, wall paper, blinds, furniture etc)Then as you get it done the rest looks really bad so you keep going way over the budget. We only go around once as far as I know.So heck go for the gusto.
