Calling the GODFATHER!

« on: March 27, 2006, 10:20:42 PM »
I've got a mission for ya. After all the summer fun is gone I'm tearing down my 67 for a resto. I gave it alot of thought. I won't be all original and here's why.
1. cost and availabilty of parts.
2. nitpickers,I cant stand it. if it original it's gotta be perfect or you catch hell.
3. there are somethings i just gotta upgrade to feel safer, I drive this beast daily. Original might be great for a trailered car but not for a driver.
Anyways there's a hundred pro and cons.

I don't want to pimp it up or cali style it or whatever.
I'm thinking souped up the way it would have been in the late sixties or so.
I plan on upgrading the brakes and using braided lines and  fittings for the fuel system.I dont want any possible leaky parts or clamps that rattle lose.
I will seperate the body from pans and put in all new pans and such.Media blast and paint inside and out. Redo it all.

Here is where i need you, I want to build a motor that will pack some punch but not so much to tear the car apart. A reliable motor. That 1800 stroker keeps coming to mind. Maybe a holley carb? No duels thats not old school enough. Any how I need a shopping list for the beast so I can start collecting them. Throw some ideas my way if you will. This will be my 1st motor so I definetly need you on this.

I have the original wheels for the original look and some porshe widened rims for the weekend hot rod/mountain driving days. I want it to still look like a 67 but be fun to scoot along around the backroads. And I gotta finish it all for the next Bugapalooza.
I've got a million ideas,I just have to sit around the campfire and eliminate a few and decide.
Holler back.

Bug Tech will be with you as soon as he gets back from Zens house. I think he went down there to gather up some old dasher parts. Something about throwing them over around East Ridge somewhere.

Whew!!!  Been out gathering Dasher parts and some Musket Balls and I need to get out of my Camo from the penatration into the "Triangle"
Scott, Go ahead and apply for your Federal Grant. You will need two engines, One to depend on and one to "Blow Up".  You build big engines for two reasons:
    1- To Stomp all "Ricers
2- To see how far you can get the front end off the ground while stomping "Ricers" at the traffic light.
We will talk about this after I finish my KdF. 8)

Funny I was thinkin the same thing. I figured i'd rebuild the 1600 and keep it handy. I'm sure we can come up with some type of rice killer. If not do you think we could build one of them rice launching catapaults?
Let me know if you need a hand on the kdf moving anything around or whatnot.

Bugtech was all out of old dasher parts Zen tought he was safe because he had all of them hed at his house. And Bugtech snuck in and took the stockpile while poor ol Zen was at work trying to make money for more VW toys. You should be ashamed of yourself Bugtech                              [-X  [-X  [-X  [-X  [-X  [-X

Bugnut you should build you a Dunebuggy. There a blast to drive,if you tare it up you would still have you daily driver to get in and drive without having to change motors, plus they are a lot lighter easy to make go FAST.

:D Hmmm a 67 restoration!!! Been there and done that. IMHO a 2017cc stroker would be a great engine. A 1776 is a great engine size too.The 2017cc is what we started with and it was and still is an excellent daily driver engine. Not too expensive to build overall.

Finding original parts can be tough and especially with the 67. Build the transaxel to handle the extra power. The 2017 ripped the spyder gears out of the stock tranny when a tractor trailer came over the hill as Josh was pulling out of Oversprays place one afternoon. He was already in gear but punched it hard and that took care of the gear.

I see you plan on doing the work yourself.  I got some good suggestions for each phase if you decide to have the work done by others:

1. Paint & Body: Charles Overton (Overspray) at Overtons Resto in Tallapoosa
2. Transaxel: Ronnie Hunter in Hiram Ga
3. Engine: Steve Sands at Pro Flow Performance in Hiram

These I recommend from personal experience.

Bugnut,I know you call mine the cali look but really isn't.Yes on dunebuggies I just like chrome. It's just me.Theres not a whole lot you can do to a dunebuggy to make it alot different. But if you didn't try then you end up with just an old ordinary fiberglass shell.Just my opinion and everyone has one. What worries me is you are worried what other people think. You are trying to build a car for your peers and not you. It's going to be your car.You should care about what you want.Everyone is going to tease you no matter what you do.It's just a game people play.It really has to do with your personality not your car.If people like you they will tease you.If you have a bad personality Where you don't get along with anyone then you will be left alone.I would rather be teased.Just food for thought.I think bugtech said it pretty well about engines.I would also get a reliable engine then add just a thing or to to it to make it a little faster.I really wish my engine had more of a standard engine in it because I don't race but my 1835 had what it had when I got it.My car is so light you can push it around very easy when you need to move it without cranking it.Plus I wouldn't drive it wound up or as fast as I could because if feels as if it doesn't have alot of control at a high speed. It's not like the bigger engines but for mine not weighing anything a big truck going by and both traveling at a higher speed feels like you are fixing to go in the ditch due to the draft. But remember that mine is a "cali buggy" lol and yours will have a little more weight.

I really don't have a problem with custom/cal look .Its only when you see someone take a totaly intact, original split window Bug and stuffs a 2180 cc engine in and slams the poor thing to the ground, slaps on a set of BRM wide wheels and tires, cut the dash up to install a 1000 watt sound system that makes my skin crawl.
