California Import Parts front beam kit: any opinions?

« on: May 09, 2006, 10:05:58 PM »
Hello all,

My son's '66 Beetle has a broken right front lower ball joint.  Rather than just fix this one thing, I was thinking about the complete front beam kit from California Import Parts.  If I did that, I'd go ahead and put a disk brake kit on it too.  I could get the beam, brake kit, and new tie rods for about $600.00, which might make it more desirable when we sell it (which will be soon).

Has anyone had any experience with these front beam kits?  Decent quality?

From reading my Haynes manual, it doesn't sound like pulling the front beam is too bad a job.  Are there any tricks I should know?

Thanks,

Monty

Your guess is good as mine on recouping your money. If everything else on the front end is in pretty good shape, You can replace all 4 ball joints  a whole lot cheaper. If I were selling the car,I don't think I would let someone else enjoy my new disc brakes.  Its your call.
As far as changing out the whole thing, Its pretty simple but a lot of grunt work.
I would just replace whats needed and let it ride. At least both lower ball joints. Like I said , Its your call.

Basically, David is right on the money.  If ball joints are bad, replace them and work your way out (spindles, disc brakes, etc).  It is true that the Haynes manual you speak of shows about 6 or so bolts that stand in the way of you having your new axle beam.  What it doesn't mention is that if your frame head is fortified with rust, you could be in a world of hurt if things start breaking off (or stripping out) in there-I've run into this a couple of times in the recent past on customer cars.  Another note: beware of inexpensive front disc brake kits out there for '67 and down bugs.  What they only mention in that really fine print is the cheap kits will leave you with 4-lug front wheels.  If you're not into mis-matched wheels or adapters, the price for true 5-lug conversions is SIGNIFICANTLY higher.
P.S. if you intend on using adapters, be aware that they will throw your wheels futher outward as will most available dropped spindles if you're thinking about those too.  1/2" to 5/8" doesn't seem like a lot untill your tires drag the lip of your fender...not a good deal when you've just forked over all that money for a new front end.
