It's because when it is straight, your hand will hit the ashtray/ parking brake handle in 3rd gear. I have a bent extension on mine to keep me from hitting my hand. You can straighten it if you want, but it probably isn't necessary. I wouldn't.

Ok, I never would have thought that. I have found a couple other things wrong. I need to ask
One other question, which way does the ball in the coupler at the transaxle go? This one was up, on the samba I read that it goes down. Which is right?

I'm an idiot. I somehow missed the photo. I was thinking of the actual shifter inside the bus with the shift knob on it! My bad. I don't recall the bend in the shift rod, but it might be stock. I know that they are bent on bugs and people mess up by trying to straighten them out.
As for the ball, I'm not 100% certain what you are talking about. Is that the piece on the far left of your photo?

In the attached pic is the end of the shift rod
That connects to the transaxle coupler. The offset
Piece was turned upward on my bus. Is it to
Go back that way or turn and face toward the ground.
I've read on the samba that it goes down?!?
Which is correct?
Thanks, lamar

The 1st step is admitting you have a problem...
